Short Shorties

77gr does not do so well in shorties, the 70gr was built for shorties, but for super shorties well thats why we did the 6x35, and why the 6.8SPC came out.

You could do a 5.56mm round optimized for a super short barrel, but its not going to be ideal in a longer barrel.

Damn the baffles on that can looked ugly after those 10 or so mags run F/A

The unfortunate thing about niche weapons is when you tailor ammo for it, its no longer a general purpose ammo swap.

Actually I didn't build that one. I just test fired it and the thing was an evil, fire spitting beast. Kev is right though, it must have run 1400 rpm on FA. And everything glowed red after about 5 mags. It got so hot I couldn't even hang onto it. The platic mag followers began to melt and the oil soaked rag I was using to hold onto the front end kept bursting into flames after each mag. This was it after it cooled down enough so we could touch it again. :)

How do you think the long 77gr bullets would perform in a real shorty? Keeping in mind these kinds of PDW's are really meant to replace a pistol.

SHORT AR Platforms

The way I figure it, a 10.5" has the best ballistics-to-overall size balance in a shortie AR platform.

Sure, you can have a 7.5" barrel, but when you put a flaming pig or a PWS CQB comp on so it's reliable, you get about the same length gun as a 10" with FH. Thing is, the 7.5 will have a lower muzzle velocity. The 10" uses a standard carbine gas tube and can be produced by cutting-down any barrel with a carbine gas system.

I should also add that I discount using a pigtail gas tube, since it's less common, more expensive and only available from a few sources.

Soo... What about pistol calibre blowback AR conversions? OK, there's no gas tube, so the barrel can be as short as needed, but it still needs that buffer spring in the tube to function. Because of that, the overall length isn't reduced by much, and even though it's maybe a bit more concealeable/controllable/maneuverable, it's a pistol calibre. Compared to an assault rifle calibre, I'd rather have the assault rifle calibre and the common magazines.

There are lots of weird and wonderful AR's out there that are ultra short with modified actions and special recievers. That said, it's my reasoning that if you can't change simple parts, chop a barrel and drill-out a hole, and still use the same magazines and ammo you have on hand, then you should have a new gun. One designed from the ground-up to fill the short shortie role.

Maybe I've overlooked something, but that's my logic. :wave:
