Short shotgun w/choke tubes?

I was all set to buy a Maverick 88 with 18.5 barrel until I thought to check if it took choke tubes. Of course it doesn't,so now I'm stumped. This gun is for double duty-first is as a coyote gun,to back up the .223 on closer range multiples. I need it to be able to make 40 yd shots, probably not achievable with cylinder bore and #4 buck or BBB shot.
Secondly is for protection while bowhunting in bear country or while hiking in same. Cylinder bore is fine for that.
I really don't want to go over the 18.5 barrel length in the interest of portability but if there was something else close to that wiht screw in chokes I guess it could work. The Mossberg is just such a good deal, everything else seems to be considerably more expensive. Any options out there that I'm missing? What does it cost to have a barrel threaded for choke tubes?

Not sure what your price range but check out the Stoeger Coach Gun Supreme

http://www.stoegerindustries.com/firearms/stoeger_coach_gun_supreme.php"

has the screw in chokes and a 20" barrel weight is 6-1/2 lb

I lied it was $130, but TMG Services in Campbell river did it for me, it turned out great. I found them thru CGN site in Gunsmithing. He was a member here, I don't know if he still is? Hope it helps.

The new 870 express tacticals come already choke threaded for their rem tactical choke that comes with it, I would assume other rem chokes would scew in. Someone correct me if I'm wrong!

12.5 short enough?

How short do you want? The 12.5 grizzley with ghost ring sights from CanAm comes with a choke tube...same thread as browning and several others, chokes run around $20

I obtained a 20" remchoke barrel for my 870 a while back, it is nice the only thing is the soldering job on the rear sight base was not completed, a white precipitate kept coming through the paint for quite a while, (I am assuming this was the brazing flux). This was the express version with the matt black paint job. It shoots Winchester 1 oz slugs well enough for me though.

Interesting,I did not know that! Does anyone think that this might be a viable option for coyote hunting? I'd like to be able to reach 40yds with #4 buck or the BBB stuff I've been using but I wonder how much velocity one would sacrfice with that short tube?

The current models do not have chokes... they are fixed cylinder bore:mad:
I would have been interested to see how they pattern though, but doubt there would be much of one beyond 20 yds.

Someone else here could probably provide a more accurate account of the velocity loss from the shorter barrel, though I cannot imagine it being too great and would worry more about the pattern. The Grizz comes with a modified tube that might do the trick with #4 buck; if not, just go to full.

I picked up one of these about a year ago and followed up with an extra full turkey choke and Carlson extended/rifled choke tube ($34.99 at Epps), though I ended up sighting it in with the modified choke for slugs. It was shooting fine at 50 yards with standard velocity Winchester, Foster style slugs, and would probably be good out to about 70 yards on deer. I also have an IC choke sitting around so I'm set for most situations with shot or slug.

I use my 20ga SxS for most upland hunting, but with the proper shot and choke I'm sure the Griz would do for most small game in the bush. Though I can load a choke/shot combination that could work for waterfowl, I'd hate to imagine the type of lead I'd need to hit anything flying at any distance.

The gun is somewhat heavy (i.e. more like a Remington Express than the lighter Wingmaste), but I like the fact that it comes with the sling swivels attached. So far I think it's a great gun for a variety of purposes, even if I'd hate to see how much I'd have to lead a goose flying past me!

Regards,

Frank

PS. My two Remington barrels fit fine in mine, unlike with my Norc HP9 which didn't take them. Of course, with the ghost ring in the rear, I'm not sure how practical that is, but I thought you like to know.

Where you are matters. Having a firearm in a blind while bowhunting isn't legal, in most places.
"...to back up the .223..." That'll do nicely with the right bullet and sights. Doesn't need a 'back up'. You'd never be fast enough to change guns anyway.
"...a rifle sighted smooth bore 870 with choke tubes..." 20" 'Wingmaster' barrel. Don't think it'll go on a Mossberg/Maverick. It's kind of daft that Mossberg makes barrels that'll go on an 870 though. Remington, of course, really doesn't want to admit Mossberg exists. An M500/M88 is every bit as good as an 870.
In any case, you can buy a Mossberg M500 combo(1 slug barrel and 1 'accu-set' barrel) for $469.99. $519.00 for the same gun with 3 barrels(24" rifled, 24" smooth bore and a 28" vented rib barrel) from Al Flaherty. His site is kind of confusing about the barrels(poorly written), but a Combo would be a good buy. http://www.alflahertys.com/products.php?cat_id=30&sub_cat_id=280
A 20" barrel isn't an awkward thing compared to an 18.5" barrel either. You won't notice the difference. Put one on my 870 after years with an 18.375". Cut down from 30. Much heavier, but I can still stand with it, in one hand, and not have the muzzle touch the ground.
"...the Stoeger Coach Gun Supreme..." Stoeger is the importer. Mostly from Brazil. Not a bad thing though. No changeable chokes.
