Hey all I am at my end with my AR, I have tried different loads, an A2 butt, collapsible stock (proper springs and buffers), different mags and still the second round ends up jammed in the action. looking at it, it seems as though the bolt is grabbing the round out of the mag mid case body and it ends up jammed at a 30 degree angle with the bolt resting on the case body. Is there different weight springs/buffers? I went up to 28 gr Win 748 with a 52 gr hollow point spitzer with no better results. Have tried these bullets in addition to 55 gr FMJ's, and 55gr pointed soft points. Powders tried are 26gr BLC-2 (55gr FMJ), Win 748 with the 55gr PSP (26gr). I have not tried NATO ammo yet, as I do not have access to any (Edmonton is 3 hrs away) Any help/suggestions are greatly appreciated!

Chris

Test for short stroking. Put one round in the mag and fire the rifle. Repeat a few times. If the bolt locks back reliably then the rifle is not short stroking.

If that load then continues to cause the problem you have described then the problem is not load related. Most likely it is a mag related problem. Most problems like that are usually mag related.

Are you absolutely positive you have the correct spring? The CAR spring is shorter than a rifle spring.

You say proper spring and buffers but then you ask is there different springs and buffers.

Yes there is different springs and buffers. Give all the particulars of your AR so we can help.

Did it ever run properly?
Did you buy it off the shelf new? or did you build it/buy it from someone else?
Does it run with factory ammo or are you only having trouble with reloads?

Me being new to ARs, could it be something simpler like gas rings lining up and robbing you of pressure?

The gas ring think lining up is BS. Mine after I clean them no matter how I set them staggered always end up lining up again with no problems.

hmmm... at first I thought a bad mag or out of spec lower but obviously you can put a round in the chamber by using the charging handle

It must be short stroking. Not enough gas somewhere; FSB not lined up on barrel, REALLY worn gas rings.

I'm not a tech or anything but thats my 2C

FYI, you can pull the gas rings off a M4A1 and it will still cycle...
A little erraticly - but still cycle.

Follow Suputin's advice

Load 1 and fire.
If it locks back, its not short stroking.

The pedigree of the upper may help.
Barrel - and gas port size, gas tube length, gas block etc.
As well as bolt and carrier.

Once you get us that, its easier to actually troubleshoot, rather than the informed and the ignorant spouting ideas on the net.

I have shot many rounds single loaded and it always locks the bolt to the rear, good call, I never thought about that. I should clarify by proper buffer and spring, I ment proper length, I was not sure if there was different weights for different applications (whatever they would be!) I have never shot factory through it, I am hoping to get some picked up for me next weekend. As for peticulars, it is a Wilson 16" upper, an Olympic lower, bolt and carrier came with the upper.

I made sure the gas rings were not lined up, and they are brand new, I have 3 different mags and they all so the same thing. Thanks for all the suggestions guys very much appreciated. It is very frustrating to have a black piece of awsomeness and have it run like a Yugo!

You put the gas tube in upside down when you removed it?

Wouldn't that block the gas? Because it will lock the bolt open every time I single load it. And it did this before I changed the gas block, I did that last week. It should be mentioned, it will cycle now and then, just more often not.

I was just saying that if you block the gas it still fires but locks out as single shot after each shot.

Welp, I am almost to the point of finding someone on here that could look at it. I could send them the rifle, mags and go from there. Anyone know where I could send it that would be able to work on a restricted?
