What are the pro's and con's to a short throat chamber? SAAMI spec's state that the COL is 3.340". My COL measurements touching the lands are 3.292" to 2.300". Now that's .040 to .048 shorter than the SAAMI spec's. I never had a short throat chamber before, is this acceptable?

My most accurate rifle has a short throat. I was dissapointed until I shot it.
You will have higher pressure compared to a long throat, but should still get your velocity at lower charges.
Sounds like a 270 win, depends on which bullets you were intending to use. You'd be ok with Barnes or bergers, not so ok with acccubond lr as they maybe seated real deep in the case.

I don't know what reamer the gunmaker used. The bullets I'm using are the standard 130gr. Accubonds for the 270 Win. It felt really weird to witness such a short COL. I made 30 measurements to make sure, and sure enough a short COL. The bullet appears funny seated very deep; I'm use to having a long sleek cartridge. I'm still waiting for a response from the gunmaker of why a short throat?
I much prefer a short throat.. especially if one reloads... it allows for the best accuracy (short bullet jump) and as the throat erodes you can seat the bullet accordingly and keep the accuracy... if you start out with a long throat you have to load more powder to get the same velocities you would have with a short throat and you can not chase the rifling for as long as you can with a short throat.
Your gunsmith probably did you a favor. Conventional bullets can be seated a bit deeper if needed and the latest generation of high BC wonder bullets will reach the lands and still fit in less than magnum length magazines.
Worst case scenario, its easy to remove a bit of additional metal, and somewhat harder to put it back in.

Thanks Buckmastr, Guntech and Dogleg for assuring me that the short throat is statutory. It appears that my new rifle will profit with accuracy and less powder to maintain velocities. I will now have new confidence at the reloading bench and range. Once again, THANKS!!!

Keep in mind, COAL varies with differences in bullet profile. In a match rifle, I want to be able to seat the bullet ahead of the neck/shoulder juncture. In a hunting rifle, I don't really care. If it shoots, it's fine. Having said that, I have to admit, it bugs me when I can't utilize my magazine length.
I as well have always utilized the magazine length. This is my first custom "short throat chamber" and seems very unorthodox not to have a long sleek cartridge. I will give it a try with this, new to me, "short throat chamber." I'll start off with a .020 jump and develop ladder test powder loads. It will be interesting to see where the pressure signs will start with the ladder testing.
