When I was shooting service rifle years ago I used an ACOG TA31; excellent optic that only gets better as the distance increases, but it's expensive and the eye relief is unforgiving (not good for improvised positions). When I started shooting AR's again I got a Trijicon TR24 1-4x24 triangle reticle; excellent glass, reticle is bright on even the sunniest of days, nearly as fast as a red dot, great for CQB, but the reticle becomes HUGE much beyond 200 meters and can't effectively be used for hold overs (no service rifle for the TR24). I recently acquired a Vortex PST 1-4x24 (I've only had it out once so far so my opinion may change without notice); reticle works for CQB, service rifle and hunting (it's the most versatile of the three), very well priced, seems (surprisingly) well made thus far, has some very impressive features (eg. zero stops), but the glass is not as clear as the others, the reticle is battery lit (potential in-opportune failure), the reticle may prove too dimly lit during bright days. I'm a huge Trijicon fan, but this Vortex is a damn good optic, seriously good if you factor in the cost advantage and the no questions asked warranty. If I'm still this impressed in a few months time I'll probably do the unthinkable and sell my TR24.
