Shorten O/U Barrel

I want to turn my over/under into a pack gun by shortening the barrel to 20 inches. Can this be done by a gunsmith? Possible disadvantages? Thanks.

I know it can be done, however would you not want to do it to a shotgun that did not cost as much as a Browning Cynergy.Considering that it is going to be a pack gun the chance of it getting dinged and marked a bit. Maybe selling the Cynergy and buying something cheaper to have shortened and having some left over to buy something else would work.

It would get costly if you want the choke tubes re-installed, I'd just buy a coach gun(cheap) that is all ready to go! Sell the Browning instead, you could buy 6 or 7 coach guns!
 
Assume that cost is no object. I will buy extra barrels and shorten them. Let's get back to the question. Can O/U barrels be shortened? What are the costs and implications? Thanks.

To just cut the barrels and recrown is not that expensive. With the shorter barrels you will lose some velocity and your shot pattern will open up sooner so you will not get the reach you had before. However for a pack gun 20 inch barrels will due anything you would expect it too. If you are going hunting then you would change barrels and hunt.

O/u barrels can be shortened. You will lose choke and as I recall Cynergy barrels are belled at the end so I am not sure if they could be rethreaded for the same choke tubes. You may lose barrel convergence and the gun would look like crap at the muzzle end. It is possible that unless done with some care that either a top or mid rib might need resoldering. And you'd need a new bead.

The problem is Browning doesn't offer replacement barrels for their o/us. What few are out there even for the Citoris are hard to find I've never seen a replacement Cynergy barrel anywhere.

So if you really want a 20" Cynergy you'll have to do it to the barrels that it came with. Doing something like that to a Cynergy would be completely deranged and ruin the gun but it's your gun to ruin as you wish.:rolleyes:
 
Possible disadvantage: Turning a $2500 shotgun into a $200 shotgun.

Possible advantage over a cheap coach gun: Nothing

Even if you could order them from the Browning Custom Shop it would probably be cheaper and it would definitely be faster to buy a second Cynergy just to cut the barrels.

It would still be deranged however.
 
I would have been willing to buy extra barrels and chop them. However, I just called Browning and they do not sell extra Cynergy barrels and do not plan to do so. I am not willing to buy a whole new gun just to have extra barrels. That's too extreme.

I am not sure about this model, But most makers
hand fit there barrels to that receiver and will not
fit other receivers, I have cut a few SxS and singles
down with now problems- the most best one is worth
$150.oo Cut that Browning??? are you nuts??

Go to Trade Ex and pick up an old spanish OU for a few hundred dollars less than any Browning. Having the barrels cut and crowned and the rib resoldered will probably double the price. Now all you have to do is modify the stock to emulate the Cyllergy recoil pad arrangement.
 
Update

I started this thread some time ago, and now have an update. My objective was a 12 ga. over/under with 20" barrels for use as a pack gun. My orginal plan was to shorten an extra set of barrels for my Cynergy. However, Browning will not sell extra barrels.

Therefore, the solution was to buy another gun. I found the Stoeger Outback (O/U, 20" barrels, rifle sights, 3" chamber). It is a nice little gun. Handles well. Patterns nicely. Difficult to find in Canada though.
 
A side by side shotgun loads quicker and easier than an over and under due to how far you have to break the action open for the bottom barrel to clear...

Cutting and crowning barrels on either a S x S or an O/U is not a big deal labour wise... but you lose all choke and not often tubes can be installed... if they can it is expensive...

You lose velocity when you make the barrels short if that is a concern...

Considering an 18 inch barrel on a pump action makes for a fairly short gun for handling, a 26 inch barrel on a double handles about the same...
