Called in today they told me mine should be getting close to being completed and to call back next week to see if they are ready for references. They received mine on December 8 so getting close to 2 months now.

Does not mean anything, I hear that answer 4th week in row now.Mine was received 8th of december too. One of ladies was more in mood to talk, she explained that they had some kind of backlog since mid of december, which happened due to unexpectedly high amount of christmas sales, so CFOs were busy with transfers only for couple of weeks. So apps which have status "passed initial processing" not necessarily mean there are some background checks made, they can easily be not even started yet.
Knowing canadian bureaucracy, it works this way, from my experience: If some office receives 100 apps a day and they got process organized that all 100 apps will be finished within 45 days, this is considered normal and everyone is happy. If for a week they will be receiving 200 apps a day, they will still process 100, and postpone rest. So they got 500 apps in backlog. Next, when incoming apps will be back to 100, they wont hold recently received apps because it will prolong processing time and worsen their statistics - job security, baby, job security. No way. They will process newer apps faster, and raise plan to, say 105 apps a day so they will eliminate backlog in 20 days. Final picture will be like in a month their office will process 2000 aps on time, and 500 will be delayed 1-5 weeks which will be less noticeable in reports.
So dont be surprized, and dont go like "@!@#$#$@%!!!!" when you see applicant who sent his papers about a month after you will get his license and you will still be asked to "call next week, maybe - we are not ready yet"
1. mail app with tracking so you know when it was delivered.
2. count 28 days since app was delivered + couple days -> you will see it online
My lord that ssucks haha. And to think I'm waiting on this to apply for a job . The position will be filled and my hair will be Grey ...... If I have any left ....... by the time those guys pull finger ...... they had my app on the 19th of Jan
They've had mine since Dec 11th and I'm also waiting to apply for a job, a point I've mentioned in each of my weekly calls since it went online. I've missed one posting and will likely miss another opportunity if I don't get it by the end of next week. I'll call Thursday as that's the day I have my weekly phone conversation with the lady that tells me to try again next week.
Mine was sent late October, my reference called in, which WAS A HUGE TIME SAVER… however because I've seen a medical practitioner in the past 5 years for "behaviour" issues, the feds sent my application to the CFO of the province, and they actually assigned a detective to my file. Anybody else encounter this? I was told because there are criminals applying for guns, my application may get relegated and could take years… yikes… anyhow I'm in no rush but I'd like to move things along.

That's too bad, they shouldn't need to call your references or anything like that so don't know what the hold up would be, other then your location sometimes it seems.
Thanks for info. I just called back and they said they are ready for photo scan...is that a good sign?
