Shorten PAL Approval Times

Im saying the application process is unnecessary. If you register for the safety firearms course you should automatically be screened before the class takes place. Something like this: You call on Wednesday to register for a course with an instructor. Its the instructors job to contact the RCMP before the class takes place, usually only requiring either an approved, denied, or further inquiry (if serious charges or old convictions are in play). After you pass the safety course, your instructor should have to call the number and provide their details and yours and say "yes he passed." There's automatically been a few days cool-off while the classes occurred anyways.
My 2c. The present system is in place to prevent interest/new shooters/make shooters lives harded via ridiculous wait times and over-filled bureaucracy

"If you have indicated either restricted or
prohibited firearm(s) in Box 2, the fee is $80"

$80 for both.

I mailed in 1 original copy of my PAL test and 1 original copy of my RPAL test. Leaving me with a copy of each for my own records (aka. if the app gets lost in the mail).

Bugger i marked both and only have the paper work for non restricted and payed $60. Figured they were just asking for future knowledge. Should i give a call to make sure i'm not waiting longer?

Just to make sure I am understanding, you are applying only for non-restricted licence, but checked both non-restricted and restricted boxes?

I can see where the confusion lies as the question is "b) Indicate the class of firearm(s) you wish to acquire and possess in the next five (5) years. Check all that apply." and not what licences are you applying for?

Their instructions are "Box 2 b) Note: The licence issued to you and fees are based on the firearms you currently possess and the firearms you intend to acquire and possess."

I would say that neither the question nor the explanation to the question are very clear, but my interpretation is they are really just asking you what licences you are applying for right now.

I would call to verify and get it straitened out, otherwise they may think you are applying for both while your application sits waiting for your non existent restricted paperwork to come in.

Maybe some other nuts can chime in.

Thanks survival. I reread the instruction again for the 5th time and now realise i should give a call on tuesday. Thanks everyone. Saving me more wait time.

Sent my PAL application off Apr 18th via registered mail, it was recieved Apr 26th at Mirimachi, I talked to someone there about a week later and she knew nothing, called back in a week and was told it had been sent to the Alberta office, checked this morning and my license has been issued. 28 days on the nose.

Bottom line is you have the potential of saving a lot of time compared to someone who just sits and waits. A positive, polite approach in helping them to complete their task will go a long way.

Hey guys. I applied from AB and this is what happened.

April 13th: mailed in my application
April 19th: application received
May 5th: application finally online
May 6th: I called in for my interview, did it, was given my app # and both of my references called in with that number and did their interviews.
May 17th: day 28!!! license has been issued.
May 18th: license is being printed. (according to the AB CFO)

As if May the 26th, I'm still waiting for the darn piece of plastic to show up.

Should see it tomorrow. Usually 8-9 days.

Sent my application in (without test results since im in ontario). Sent registered mail and it showed up as delivered on tuesday. Called today and was told they were backlogged a week to get applications into the system.
Took my test 2.5 weeks ago, still waiting on ontario CFO to send me test results. Should i give them a call?

Dude. You are going to be waiting a while. A lot of people in the previous pages (myself included) waited 8 weeks plus. They had a huge backlog which I understand has gotten better. If you want to know where they are, call the Ontario CFO and they will tell you what week they are at. I took my test March 19th and got my results on May 17th.

Good luck. I hope your wait is less!

At this point the Ontario CFO is going to take 8 weeks minimum to process your test results. If you call them before 8 weeks they won't even bother to look up your name and see what is happening, they will simply tell you to wait at least 8 weeks then call back.

chiko my application was recieved on the same day as yours and still waiting on my references to be interviewed. Hopefuly not to much longer

if ur application is not online, then they have not opened ur application package yet. its sitting somewhere with a received date stamped on it. Just be patient until it appears online. once it is online though, do not stop calling in to "check in." when i called in to check on my application, the lady gave me my app number and transferred me to the person conducting interviews. She specifically told me to give my app number to my references so that they can call in and speed things along for everyone. if they refuse to give it to u, then do the following:

go online to check up on ur status at http://www.rcmp-grc.gc.ca/cfp-pcaf/online_en-ligne/app_dem-eng.htm and look at ur application number. it will be in the format XX-YYYYYYYYYY-XX. Call in and give them the 10 middle Y numbers. that is the application number that u need to call in for the interview. Give it to ur references too.

Anyone know what the RCMP background check on applicants consists of?? Just curious to see how far they go....There is such a thing as privacy in this country isn't there??? Just a note that I checked off all five or six boxes re arrests etc as no...Never been busted for anything, no fines traffic tickets no nothing...

Then what are you worried about? I honestly don't think its much more than a check into your record (if you have one) and you answering the questions they ask on the phone. It would cost too much money to do anything more intense or thorough than that IMO..

No reason to sit patiently, especially if you are 'upgrading' from a POL. Call and get it into the processing stage.

guess what? you are applying to be bale to buy firearms, therefore you are giving the RCMP permission to check your self out.

therefore there is zero privacy and they need to know everything.
