Shortening A shotgun Barrel.

Hello All,

Looking for some advice.

I currently have a mossberg 500L (the field and deer combo) so I have a rifled barrel and a bird barrel. I would like to buy another bird barrel and turn it into a predator style barrel. 20” and can handle buck shot. Looking at the legalities from what I see is okay seeing as the barrel will stay over 18”.

Is this something I can have done ? I might be able to get my hands on a bird barrel and have it imported from the states.

It’s just impossible to find a left handed firearm with that kind of length unless you go browning bps which cost a bit more.

You can cut it down to 18" ( but do 19" to be safe) yourself with a pipecutter & files. Done many myself. BUT why , as then you
would have NO choke & your buckshot pattern would be limited to about 20 yds. Why do you not use your present bird barrel
which I am guessing has choke tubes or a fixed full ? That would work fine. You do not need a short barrel for Coyotes ,
although it may be a little more manourorable in a tight blind ?
 
Remember the barrel length is measured from the muzzle to the closed bolt face... not to any extended parts the barrel may have.

Yeah it’s really just so it’s handy. I hunt allot in thick brush and shots aren’t very far, an the shorter barrel helps with moving around. I would use my slug barrel but a few of the spots are shot only (so buck shot is used)

I’ll take it to a smith so it can be crowned and threaded for chokes.

Mossberg 500 barrels are fairly common up here second hand I’m sure you can find one here without having to import.

Not all barrels can be threaded for tubes... there are minimum/maximum bore diameters and barrel thickness...
 
I am in the same boat. I have an Ithaca 37 that some yahoo hacksawed to 18.75 inch, would be an easy fix on the lathe, but presumably the same yahoo then drilled a front site stud way canted off upright. My only option is to shorted to 18.25 to get rid of the hole and put in a proper one.
 
There's a 37A here that's been shortened with a pipe cutter.
And crewkridd too.
Spent some time with a file to square the end and a flap wheel
to git the push out the bore.
Ordered up a bead kit.
Turned out prawper.
Now to find a fix for the Mare's Leg rear stock glued back on and wired weeled.
Man, some people's kids I tell you.
