Shortening Remington 870 Magazine

I have never had a need to shorten one.
I have to ask why?
Also how you are going to attach the barrel and are you going to shorten the forend too?

just a guess:

I wanted to shorten the magazine because I was going to get an 8.5" bbl from dlask, who said they could also shorten the magazine for me. I was just wondering if anyone else here had done it before, and could offer some tips ;)

Very neat but have you considered the fact that you are creating a prohibited weapon? Do cops ever come on this site? Just a thought! Rod

Do your homework.....8.5" barrel is fully legal as long as it is a factory barrel (ala Dlask) and the overall length of the weapon is within specified guidelines (660mm or longer) would make it non-restricted. Under that and still a factory barrel might make it restricted, but not prohib..........no laws broken there....relax:rolleyes:

No way! I have an 8.5 incher from Dlask (see my avatar). Pump action + original manufactured barrel + overall length of 29 inches = non even restricted.

B-wing pilot, I would recommend having Dlask do it. IIRC they removed the mag tube, shortened the back end and resweated it on. The 3 railed short foreend kicks ass- you can put a pistol grip, rail covers, etc- whatever you like.

Well as I understand the law a non-restricted firearm must come from the factory at least 26 inches in overall length with at least an 18 inch barrel. There are some exceptions to the rule. The government did allow the Ruger M77 carbine into the country with a 16 inch barrel and there is a short barreled 410 back packer single shot that they let in but it has always been my understanding that it was against the law to cut a barrel below 18 inch’s. We had a couple gun plumbers here that were making non restricted XP 100 hunting pistols and the CFO was quite adamant that they adhere to the 26 OAL and 18 inch barrel rule before the guns could be classed as non restricted. I shot one of these guns in 7mm-08 and it was sort of a waste of time as there was no way that you could shoot it off hand. But this is Alberta and the CFO in Ontario might have other ideas. Rod

FATORY BARREL is the key here. These short barrels are being manufactured to that length, not cut from a longer barrel. DLASK here in Canada manufactures them.....this is one of those exceptions to the laws you are thinking of. When you get into pistols, it's another whole ball of wax....

I have a 12.5" from Dlask... and you want to know the funny thing? It still looks too long to me :p

Only when I see the 28" shotguns do I realize how short it is hahah.

I love short shotguns.

sorry but it has to leave the factory as a restricted. you can NEVER change a nonrestricted's class into anything other than prohibited.

Really? I thought it was different. Anywhere you have that in writing?

YES YOU CAN RECLASSIFY A LONG GUN TO RESTRICTED.

It involves a call to the CFC and some sort of verification. However if you take a shotgun and cut the bbls shorter than 18" (or 18.5 or whatever the magic number is) it then becomes prohibited automatically. Install a factory bbl of any size and you are good to go.

My buddy was looking into making a 12" pistol grip 870, he called the CFO for PEI and was told this would be no problem and to have the gun reclassified as soon as he had all of the parts necessary.

Wrong. Done it.....twice.

WRONG spent 6 months with the RCMP,CFC and CFO trying to reregister a 870 as restricted.

however you did it is just an example how the registry is screwed up.

Definition of a Prohibited Firearm

The Criminal Code states that a prohibited firearm is:

* a rifle or shotgun that has been altered to make it less than 660 mm (26 inches) in overall length;

tell me how it is legal to alter a gun to less than 26 and keep it legal.

Powerwagon I don't think the intent was to make the gun shorter than 26" just have a barrel that was shorter than factoryas long as the stock and action was 20" long you could theoreticaly have a six inch barrel IF it was made by a licenced gun manufacturer
