Hey guys, I was just wondering if its easily possible to shorten an SKS barrel to the SKS M length(picture below), and what would need to be done, and if there owuld be any long term problems ?

Legal minimum is 18 1/2"+. An SKS barrel is about 20". You could shorten it about 1 3/8". Front sight unit would have to be remounted. Hardly worth the bother.

Non-restricted status is determined by one of two things; the barrel length (470mm/18.5" minimum, like tiriaq said) and/or the overall length of the firearm (must be more than 660mm/26" -after- folding, if so equipped). This explains why Krinker Plinkers w/8" barrels and HP9-1's with 14" barrels are still classed as non-restricted firearms. One of the above conditions -must- apply to the firearm in question.

The SKS is centrefire, so the 18 1/2" limit is a given. If the barrel were trimmed to 18 1/2" plus a frog's hair, and a folding stock were fitted, the overall length when folded would have to exceed 26".
Modified SKS carbines with 16" barrels were sold in the US. As far as I know, none were ever issued with this barrel length; they are commercial versions.

Minimum barrel length (& oal) only applies to semi auto center fire rifles. The above 2 examples are 1)rimfire, and 2)pump action shotgun. They only need to meet the minimum OAL requirement of 26".
