Shortening the barrel on my SKS?

generally less rifling = less accuracy. Of course, a poor crown is also less accurate, so people do tend to shave off rifling length in favor of a more consistent rifling crown.

Sometimes the shorter, stiffer barrel improves accuracy, though. And this is an SKS we're talking about :p

Well... I did it... I just hacked it off and cleaned it up myself. Havent shot it yet but I think it turned out O.K. I went to 18.5 so if I do ever want to have it re-done professionally there should be enough left to work with. I removed the bayonet/front sight (its one piece) and cut the bayonet section off, then turned the front sight around and re-installed it (with the pin, had to cut a pin grove though) so it looks a little more finished. What do you think?

18.5" is the absolute legal minimum before restricted status kicks in. If it were necessary to crown it, this could be done, as long as the barrel was not shortened further.
The front sight looks good. Why not remove the underlugs?
