Is there a shorter action than the the standard short action (308 etc...) for some of the centr fire 22s.

I'm thinking of a 22 hornet but will look at all the popular 22s out there.
I would like to have a centrefire 22 in a gun with an action about as long as the 22 mag (give or take) the whole gun to a rimfire scale. I remember seeing a Sako I think a long time ago which fit the bill, but I don't see them now.

Thanks

there is the CZ 527, made in 22 Hornet, 222, 223, 204 Ruger and 221 Fireball, this is a small scale Mauser style action...I just bought one in 221 FB but haven't had time to shoot it yet....Sako had the Model 78 which was made in 22 Hornet...the small Sako actions for the 222 and 223 etc. were the L46, L461 and A1....I'm told the newer Sako 75 is made in the small action for the 222,223 etc...then there is a the Ruger M77 in 22 Hornet,..I have one of these also, great little rifle in 22 Hornet.

Most of the European mainstream makers have 4 or 5 action lengths, but do not seem to always have them all currently in production. I think Sako may well batch produce the baby actions then wait a few years until the pile disappears! The volume is just not the same as that for the longer ones.

The good news is that there are all sorts of nice little actions out there, they just might be attached to the "wrong" barrels. If you can located a sad rifle on one of these actions, it is worth buying to use as the basis of a custom rifle. You won't pay clearance prices for the finished rifle, but neither will you have to mortgage the kids (maybe just the wife).

The bonus is that you can easily wind up with a unique rifle that is suited to your wants and needs, not those of some dweeb in "marketing at head office".
