I own a Smith & WEsson model 629-1 revolver. I shoot mostly 44 special loads. I developed a very good load which is quite accurate and pleasant to shoot. Only problem is that it shoots about 1 inch high, even with the rear sights set at the lowest setting and a 6 o'clock hold on a 2 inch bull's eye at 10 meters.

At this point, I am wondering if I should file down the rear sight leaf, or is there a shorter sight leaf that I can buy as a replacement. Has anyone had this issue before?

I have had this same issue with a revolver (not an S&W) and the fix was, a taller front sight. Filing down the rear sight may work, but that would not be my first choice. If you decide on replacing the front sight, get one at least 1/8" taller than your current one - that will give you back a bit of adjustment, with your rear sight.

I am not sure if you can change the front sight, I know I cant on my old model S&W M28 N frame. The rear sight blade on a smith revolver should be rather inexpensive. I have had to file sights on several guns over the years but it was usually the front (single actions) A friend of mine had the same issue with his new JERICHO 941 when shooting his light target loads and he modified rear sight and it worked good for him.

You can change the front sight on a 629, but depending on the year of manufacture, it could be fastened on by a couple of different methods. If you're good with tools/guns, you could do it yourself - if not, a gunsmith might be your best bet. Google it and find out which method was used on your gun - and take it from there. I also found out that S&W makes replacement rear sight blades (in different heights). So long as you don't have the lowest one - that's an option, too. Your biggest problem will be, finding the bits you need, up here, in the frozen north - it sure ain't as easy as finding gun parts in the US.

Edit. Master-G is saying the front blade can't be replaced. I was simply passing along info I've read on the internet and it seems that I have been the victim of inaccurate info - and that hardly ever happens - HA!
Sorry for giving useless input.
