I wanted to get something that would be short enough and powerful enough to use as a protection against bears when camping. The Henry Mare's Leg in .44 Mag is nice but it looks too short to be comfortable. Any thoughts on this?

thanks

You can get full length stocks for the Mare's Legs. I don't know about henry but I've seen it for Chiappa and Rossi.

Otherwise Marlin Guide Gun is what you're after.

My Henry BB .44 carbine is pretty short. I consider a bush gun to be any gun that is at least 6" off the ground when held relaxed at my side. Most Marlin levers are good in that sense and I'm only 5'10".

Did you order it directly from Henry importer or lgs?

Ordered direct from Henry's US by phone.

x2 on the Mare's Leg with a full length stock especially in 44 Mag loaded with a 240gr hard cast bullets. With full power loads and hardcast bullets will not be a problems for Black Bear hunting with a well placed lung shot within 100 yards. If you what bear protection.... stick with full size bear spray canisters as your first line of defense with a appropriate caliber firearm second.

Very accurate, my goto cabin rifle and my NEVER to sell rifle.

I didn't realize you could alter the gun legally... yes that sounds like a great idea. Thanks!!!

33 1/4" the shortest so far!!!

You can get any full length stock and cut it down yourself to something smaller, as long as you don't go under 660mm overall length. The mare's legs can be shorter because they are manufactured that way. When modifying yourself it becomes a prohib if you chop it to under 660mm.

A 12" barrel on a pistol caliber seems like a great idea, but its tough to be consistent with my Rossi ranch hand. Can you find a folding stock for these? Can you legally attach a folding stock when the gun can fire at approx 18" OAL (With wooden grip removed)

Need more info but a folding stock on a gun under 18" OAL is probably restricted, or prohibited, depending on who made it.
