OTOH, there is the Martini-ENFIELD Carbine which is even quicker to operate: no big hammer on the side which requires separate cocking. You just flip the Lever down, drop a cartridge onto the loading ramp; if you have it muzzle-down, the round chambers itself. Then you flip the lever up, aim and fire.
It takes the very latest thing in ammunition, a smallbore (.303") cartridge which is MUCH faster than the Snider-ENFIELD round; it has more hitting power at 300 than the older Carbine has at 100, despite the very light (215-grain) bullet.
I have heard that some people even put sighting telescopes onto these little Carbines, although I really don't think this is all that practical. It will never catch on.
Complete rebuilt actions are available at about $175 and used barrels often are to be found and can be cut down to 18 inches rather easily. Breeching-up is simple.
In all, MOST practical alternative choice.
And it is still an ENFIELD.
But you wouldn't want one of those new-fangled bolt-action rifles: completely impractical, waste of ammuntion and you are never quite certain that the thing is completely unloaded. The M-E is an improvement on the rifles used at Rorke's Drift and Cetshwayo certainly thought better of THAT.
