hey, looking for info on the shortest shotgun i can make for bear defence.
i like camping deep in the forest next to a stream or river away from others and help.lol i dont like campgrounds. but thats always bear territory.

i was thinking of the dlask 12" and full stock 870 express that i can find used on the EE. how does the legal issues go with it, no way am i putting on a pistol grip either. a dare to shoot a 3" slug with one was enough for me

i just dont have the heart to take my mossberg 20" 590 out in the mud to play.

any suggestions? it must be able to have a sling too for when we go hiking.

An 870 with a dlask 12" is a viable option. So is a norinco hp9 with a 14" barrel. So is a fabarm with a 14" barrel. All are plenty short. The fabarm is probably the lightest of the bunch because it has an aluminum receiver.

What I consider to be one of the best all around bush/bear defense guns is the plane-jane Fabarm Martial w/ 14" barrel. Very light, and I can shoot slugs out of it all day with ease.

I don't know the overall length, but it's smaller than this pic makes it look.

Here's mine:

An 870 with a 12.5 or 14" Dlask barrel is a good compact gun to carry and handles well, however they are not the shortest. Dlask did make a couple of 10.5" and even an 8.5" barreled 870 that were non-restricted, they were on the board a year or two ago but I don't think they were many produced.
Cheers

Before going with the shortest possible bbl length... keep in mind you may wish to cut your stock if you are going to be wearing heavy clothes or accrying a backpack. I would go with the shortest possible bbl length that still allows you to remove up to 2" from your stock without going under the magic OAL (26" I think)

you may want to consider getting a collapsible stock and go with the norinco.

For quite some time I carried a 12 gauge Cooey sing shot which had been cut down. A single or a double can be made shorter than a pump due to the absence of a receiver. There is also the added advantage of the gun breaking down into a very short package so it can be carried in a pack.

I wouldn't hesitate to pack around your 590 - these guns are very resilient to outdoor environments. If you have the parkerized model, minor scratches easily wipe away with an oily rag.

just make sure not to use a side or top folder, if the gun can be folded or collapsed to less than 26" AND fired when in that position it would break the 26" rule.
