I love the look of the SKS para versions the americans have access to.

How short are the shortest SKS models available at reasonable prices in Canada? failing that, what would the pricetag be on shortening the barrel and re-crowning?

Easiest available is the standard SKS. To find a para, you are going to spend more as it has a niche in the SKS collector market up here. At 16 inches it will also be restricted. If you were to cut and crown an sks barrel, the lowest you could cut it would be 18 inches, as any more would make it a prohibited firearm. If you cut it to 18.5+ then at least it would still be non-restricted.

Price tag for such work would be gunsmith specific.

Look up the Manson military rifle crowning kit. - that's the price of your job, assuming you already have some basic hand tools like hacksaw, file, Emory cloth.

Oh ya- and cuts under18.5 inch are prohib to do at home.

Cut in excess of 18.5" - non-restricted.
Cut 18 to 18.5 - reregister as restricted.
Cut to less than 18" - prohibited firearm.
Rebarrelled to under 18", restricted - as long as the barrel is new production.
SKS rifles have been rebarrelled, but can be challenging.

Cost to remove front sight base, cut and crown, reinstall front sight base? Have to find a gunsmith who will do it and ask.
Cost to remove original barrel, supply, instal, finish new replacement barrel? Do you have lower back pain from sitting on a thick wallet?

For the money you would spend on it why not pick up a used CZ-858? Like really, take a $200 rifle to a gunsmith and shell out a couple hundred bucks to take 2" off the barrel, shorten and reinstall the FSB youre in the ballpark of what a used 858 is worth. The 858 is smaller, lighter, better balanced, has better ergonomics and is already 18.5" If cheap is what youre after then just remove the bayonet and cleaning rod from an SKS to shave a good pound of weight off the front. Or better yet spend the same cash on a pump 12 ga and have something with some real power for your truck gun. At least those optons retain some resale value, hacking up an SKS will lower its value. Might as well wipe your a$$ with a couple hundred bucks and flush it with your morning s**t

I just finished cutting back the barrel on my SKS to 18.5"

I removed the front sight.

Cut back the barrel

Re-crowned with this handy tool from Brownelles; http://ww w.brownells.com/gunsmith-tools-supplies/barrel-blanks-tools/barrel-chamfering-cutters/79-muzzle-crowning-cutter-prod628.aspx

Pick the right Pilot; http://ww w.brownells.com/gunsmith-tools-supplies/barrel-blanks-tools/chamfering-tool-pilots/brass-pilots-prod18295.aspx

Make sure you get the 5/8" tool so that if you cut the barrel a little off square you can hand turn the cutter to square it off.

Then I cut the bayo-lug off the front sight. Re-installed the front sight onto the barrel, then I soldered it in place (this ensures that it is square with the rear sight and stays that way). Then I drilled through the hole in the front sight to notch the barrel and re-installed the front sight pin.

It looks a little crappy now. but I want to test it out at the range (function and accuracy) before I re-blue the barrel.

I'm a little concerened that the 2" shorter barrel will affect the pressure curve in the gas system....... If it does I'll have to tear the gas system apart and drill a larger hole in the barrel to get more gas into the tube.....

I was quoted $250 by a g-smith to cut back the barrel and re-jigger the front sight, so $125 in tools seemed like a no brainer.........

Plus you get a bunch of man points for fixing your own rifle.

Plus you can probably clean up crowns on 303 British and you only need a new pilot to do other rifles. Makes sense to me.

Nice work on the SKS, I'd like to hear how it shoots and see a full rifle picture.

lets see pics of the whole rifle. range report :)

please and thank you

Range Report will come on Monday or Tueday.....

But here are the pic requested......

Finished length folded 30 1/4"

Barrel finished out at 18 9/16"

And before I get flammed for "bubbaing" this piece of history...... It was a re-furb 51 Tula, non matching #s...... SO it was worth the $169 I paid for it......

I have to admit, I had this in mind as well......

I purchased a kit with several different pilots as well. I can now re-do crowns on 22LR, 223/556, 6mm, 7mm, 308, 338 & 45.....

Total shipped was just over $300.....

Not trying to hi jack this thread, but if you have an 18.5 barrel with a 2 inch flash hider threaded on.. Could you shorten your barrel by 2 inches and permanently attach the flash hider? Keeping it non restricted?

Thanks

No. You could not. Flash hiders do not count in barrel length. It makes no difference if "permanent" or not. Barrel itself needs to be 18.5+

Depends.....

I have been told that if its a prohib revolver that they only measure the rifled barrel. So MB or otehr methods of lengthing the barrel are not allowed.

I have also been told that if the MB is made from the end of hte barrel and cannot be removed (ie: one piece of metal barrel and MB) that is allowed. I have been told that even if the screw-on MB is welded in place that is not allowed......

If you REALLY want to know you are going to have to call the CFC and speak to a firearms tech.....
