shortest without a licence?

i under stand that. if u have a pistol of any thing, requires a licence to own.
if i wanted a short rifle with 18" barrel and a full size stock, do i need a licence? im have a hard time trying to find out where like a stocked pistol and a rifle differ in flint. a min18" barrel and a 26 OAL, come to mind somewere?

the definition of a handgun is that it is designed to be shot with one hand; so that is a beginning. If the gun is modern then the barrel can be fairly short (down to 12 -14") as long as it was manufactured that way and the overall length is over 26". I doubt that would apply to home made or custom made guns.

to repeat myself; read my post again ---- for the barrel of a longarm to be shorter than 18 or 18.5" (can't remember which) the gun has to have been manufactured that way otherwise it becomes a restricted weapon and requires registration. To put it in cartridge terms, just because some companies supply non restricted shotguns with barrels in the 12 - 14" range, you cannot simply saw the barrel off of a longer gun nor screw in a shorter barrel. The specific gun must have been manufactured with the short barrel.

i want to build a short carbine in flint about 19-20" barrel, with a detachable stock, kinda like a dragoon pistol; but if i buy a pistol barrel ie. about 12" typically, and mount in a stock that is full non removable, where am i with this, still have to have 26 OAL?
You have to think in terms of a take down rifle and not in terms of a pistol with an add on stock. The distinction is that a dragoon pistol with a stock is designed to be shot without the stock as well as with it. A take down rifle is not designed to be shot without the stock. In other words if you have a turned down pistol grip as the end of the main stock you are creating a pistol. If you have a straight stock (like on a Hawken rifle) that the butt fastens to, you have a take down rifle.
the dragoon pistol with a semi permanent butt is a grey area and you will have far less hassle with a 18.5+" barrel

I know your pain trying to get an answer to this question. I am currently looking at Pecatonica Rivers's Mountaineer Repast.
The firearms technicans in Ottawa were not much help. They said if it was flintlock and requires two hands to fire, length does not matter. I had them on the site to see the gun I was talking about too!
I think if you go by the rule, "needs two hands to fire" and is 18 inch barrel or 27 inches over all, you should be okay.
