I'm starting to get interested in one of these 11.8" barreled shorties.

Were any of these rifles out of spec like the 18.6" units?

For those who've run these, how's the recoil, muzzle climb, and loudness compared to a NR 18.6" barrel?
Any and all comments on these shorties appreciated.

You will probably get better info in the Red Rifles section on this gun.

That being said, I have one in 5.56 and it is a great shooter with narry a hickup. I haven't even shot a box of ammo through it though, so perhaps I am not the best judge of the gun's character.

It has surprisingly stout recoil with no muzzle device. Mine has a slant brake on it, and clocked straight up and down made a terrible shock that transmitted through the wire folding stock. Clocked to the right and it calmed right down.

My favorite little rifle. If the SHTF and carrying a restricted became and option, it's the rifle I'd grab to keep me warm.

Yeah, I should move the thread over to the Red Rifle section.

I've shot the one wire folder stock in NR, but found it so-so. I like how it looks though. I'd probably go with the M4 collapsible or maybe all beaver barf wood for the old school Warsaw Pact look.

Your right, muzzle brakes never make you popular. I don't like shooting from enclosed, roofed range areas. I prefer the open area, and brakes seem to have less bark as not much objects around for the sound/pressure waves to bounce off of. But yeah, I hear what you are saying about other shooters. I respect that discomfort for them, and don't shoot 'braked' hardware around them unless they are ok with it, and we have ALOT of spare room between us.

MODS: Feel free to move to Red Rifles. Thanks.

I used one for a short while. It was a very fun gun. The muzzle brake was very loud and annoyed others ar the range.you must keep the chamber clean or cases will stick and be ripped in half.

Great gun -tons of fun to shoot - always gets "the look" from Elmer and co. On an overcast day the flash from the muzzle brake can actually affect your day vision, I would love to see one at night. Other than that, I had no issues with mine - ran like a top.

With the slant brake and surplus, it makes a nice large fireball on every shot. I think it would be horrible to shoot at night.

I have one with the stock CSA brake on it. Have never shot it with the brake removed, so can only comment on using the brake. Recoil is very low, the same or very slightly more than an SKS. Muzzle climb is not significant in my experience, but with 5 round mags and no fun switch it is hard to really tell. The muzzle blast with the brake is OK for the shooter but pretty offensive for the guy sitting at the next bench.

As NavyCuda says, it is a lot of fun to shoot and I agree that it would be my choice as a small SHTF rifle.

I can only echo what everyone else has said about it. It partially fills the AK void so many of us Canadian's have. I love this rifle and it would be my go to SHTF rifle. This is the CSA brake.

One of my favorite guns, in 7.62x39. With the brake, feels just like shooting the military-length CZH2003 with a brake. Not quite as much of a flamethrower as the 7.5" version, but still pretty crazy. The military brake really tames felt recoil and muzzle rise. With a Galil or AKFX stock, it's really nicely balanced. I really like the Corwin Arms brake I have on it now.

I never liked shooting with the OEM folding stock, even on my old 858 I had... the stocks that Cobra posted up there look more comfortable to me, unsure if those fold though.
