I've been slowly putting parts aside for the past year for a shorty AR-15 build. I've got a nice 11.5" bbl with standard AR-15 FSB/FST. I prefer the fixed front sight over the various flip ups. I'm going to be using a Stag Arms flattop upper. I like the look of the uninterrupted rail system like the Samson & LMT but I'm not married to the idea. I don't want to cut or replace the FSB with a low profile one.

As I see it now, KAC & LaRue are almost impossible to source in Canada new, Troy, Samson, Daniel Defense & Yankee Hill are available. Not sure about any of the ARMS products.

What would you guys recommend & why? For you guys with shorty/CQB ARs, what are you running? Pics? Any input is welcome!

Also, where's the best place to purchase an upper receiver action block & armourer's wrench in Canada?

I went with the Samson CX-EBR model of my 14.5" build.

I think it would look SWEET on an 11.5 with a fixed sight tower...

I got my armourer's wrench from CGN member Wilwagspal. My Larue 9.0 came from user Suchee.

Good luck with the build - I don't have much experience with rail systems other than my Larue, which is awesome, and a Dlask, which really sucked.

I would go with Daniel Defense for the the rail around the front site look. Or Troy stuff is nice. Larue is good to.

Daniel Defence would be my choice. Its quality and looks are A1
It is top quality and avalible through Wolverine Supply and One Shot Tactical I think its worth the extra for this system.

For the shortys, specially the 11.5 that you are getting I have always been a fan of rail system that show as little barrel as possible. For my 16'' I am getting a 9" to put on my midlength armalite.

I'd go with the DD 9.5 FSP if you want your FSP, and if yor going for a cutdown gas block the Midwest Industries MCTAR-24 which is a 10" rail which I think would look really nice because it whould show minimal barrel which I always like on shorties. + its pretty cheap to boot at 303 from Wolverine.

Yeah all you want is the flash hider sticking out at the end of the rail. Looks nice and clean.

Thanks for all the replies guys! Much appreciated! I like the LaRue, DD & Samson. I think it'll probably come down to a choice between the latter two, due to the difficulties sourcing LaRue stuff these days.

The new MRFS-CX Modular Rail Forend System that Walt mentioned looks pretty darn good. Might have to keep it within the "family" and keep my money down here on the Rock!:) IIRC its 10" long? I wonder how that would look with the 11.5" bbl & Vortex flash hider?

I thought about going "low-drag" a la "old school" but I've already got a stock Colt SP1 that takes care of that niche. Keeping the fixed FST is a little "retro" these days, but I just think it looks better and you can't get much more solid that that!

I don't think I'll be going crazy with the lasers and lights right away, probably opt for just a grip and either an Aimpoint or Eotech to start. I don't have my SIG CQB all gucci'ed up, either, so I'd like to sort of keep them along the same kinda' lines, just two different approaches to the same solution.

...But please! keep the pictures and comments coming!:)

I went with a 7" Larue - they're well worth the wait to find one.

Hey Jaycee, so do you have any pics of your rifle? I'm wondering what the 7" would look like (what is your rifle's bbl length? 10.5" or 11.5"):)

I went with a DD M4 9.0 on a 10.5" barrel. The fit and finish on Daniel Defence products is supreme and mounted with no issues. The rail stays tight, and is eay to disassemble / reassemble should the need arise.

10.5" LMT Upper with 12.0;) DD Rail and Noveske Pig on a Stag Lower.

Kind of old pic as the Samson mount got Replaced with Larue Cantilevel, Troy Buis, Magpul CTR and Maid Grip all in Dark Earth.
