My Norinco M14, cut and accurized by the M14 Doctor, shoots around 8MOA at 100 yards and close to 1MOA at 200 and 300 yards with hand loads.

Any possible explanation?

What did M14 Doctor have to say when you asked him?

Irons or optic?

I didn't ask him. I'm using a Burris Fullfield ll with DC mounted on an Arms 18 scope mount.

I would remove the scope and retest the accuracy at 100 yards with irons... hope that helps.

I did that. Same results. It's not the scope. Is it possible that because of the shorter barrel the bullet doesn't fully stabilize until it's past 100 yrds? I'm thinking it might be keyholing when it hits 100 ?

I don't know...it's just an idea.

Are the conditions you're shooting under absolutely identical (same stance, same rest, same sling, etc.) for the 100 yard and 200-300 yard shots? I'm wondering if some small, seemingly unimportant change is affecting your patterns.

OK, what ammo are you shooting? 147, 155, 168 etc...

Absolutely identical.

8 MOA at 100 and 1MOA at 2 and 300?
That is strange ain't it?
Now I'm curious and kinda wondering why I didn't get a p.m. about it.
Not gonna diagnose from my keyboard but that condition is kinda baffling.

What muzzle velocity are you getting with that load/powder?
Test firings on ALL rifles I've built are done with factory federal 150gr power shock. (I don't use reloads or surplus for obvious liabilty reasons)

Shoot it at paper and report back. You might be simply shooting over or under the plates at 100 and calling that a larger group size.

I did shoot it at paper. I just gave the plates as an example. But, it prints 6-8 inches at 100 on paper and under 3 inches at 200 and 300...consistently.

That's too dramatic of a difference to be credible. Maybe I'm pig headed, but I simply don't believe that report. It defies physics. What sort of path are these magic bullets following to veer so far off point of aim up close, but somehow zero back into the point of aim the further they go out?

I will be happy if my Norinco can shoot MOA at 200 to 300 yards so Thomas did an exc job for the barrel shortening / accurizing!

I have never seen a rifle shoot tight groups at long range and get worst when the distance get shorter.

What ammo were you shooting?

Did you try different brand / weight of ammo?

I thing you have got yourself an ultimate sniper rig if your rifle shoot tight groups at 200-300 hundred yards and should be really happy about it now you just have to solve the mystery on why the group spread when the distance get closer:confused:
