Shorty M305 Muzzle brake, Why?

My biggest complaint about the stock M305 is the unwieldy length in the bush. I realize that a shorty would look strange without a brake, but is there other any reason not to leave it off and the barrel unthreaded? Is the legal barrel length measured with or without the brake? Or are there brake options that are so short as to add insignificant extra length? Remember my M305 is like a Mastercraft wrench from Cdn tire. It's useful and inexpensive and I have no problem modifying it visually if that gets the job done for me. I'm not discussing chopping up a collector's item, right?

If you scope the rifle just go at it. However if you wish to use the irons; the front post is attached to the flash hider or muzzle brake. You can get a Navy sight that attaches to the gas system but some people don't like the picture.

The choice is your's really, and if you have one of the M305s with the 'Joker's hideout cant' (old Batman) on the sight mount; you're going to have to pitch it anyway.

Good time to start a new shorty project.;)

Muzzle brakes/flash hiders do not add to Barrel length or Overall length. Not even if they are welded on.
Lots of firearms don't have a threaded muzzle, no need to get one if you don't want one.
I'd thread the barrel anyways just in case you change your mind in the future.

Assuming you are using a gas lock front sight and thus do not require a front sight base at the muzzle, I would install a muzzle device for two reasons:

1. The rifle would look incomplete without one.
2. It does provide extra protection for the barrel crown.

An A2 type flash suppressor reamed out for .30 calibre bullets would add minimal length to the rifle.

Obviously, but the original poster doesn't seem to be too concerned about recoil reduction if he is considering not installing a brake.

Some build their rifles to look taticool, some for form and function. If its only for the tacticool look then there's always Airsoft. Safe to say most folks who use a muzzle brake want some form of recoil reduction and muzzle control.

I'm not that concerned about muzzle control and recoil reduction in a 11lbs semi chambered in 308/7.62x51. Obviously, with out a flash hider, resale value is limited, but again, it's a $415 bush/truck/boat gun.

I have my Polytech at the 14doctor right now.
He is shortening the barrel and leaving the muzzle naked (no muzzle brake or flash suppressor )
it is in a sage chassis.
I hate muzzle brakes and flash suppressor's

To me, the FH has no use since we can't shoot after daylight, nor do I need to hide my location. Having it on is purely cosmetic and to protect the crown if it matters to one. Remember, most hunting rifles have no FH to protect the crown and they work just fine.

I find a brake is necessary as I enjoy target shooting. It reduces muzzle rise so I can do follow up shots with minimal movement. I also find I do not lose my view of the target on my scope after each shot.

Between the 2, I'd go for a brake.

"...the unwieldy length..." Nonsense.
"...not that concerned about muzzle control..." You should be. However, there are muzzle brakes and flash hiders. Ain't the same thing.

I carry it daily in thick brush and the muzzle hangs up regularly. Perhaps you should post over on the hunting forum about how they are unable to perform fast second shots with their hunting rifles without a muzzle brake. Apparently you view an 11 lbs semi-auto rifle chambered in 308 as difficult to control without a muzzle brake. Your post is an example of a "high post count" fail. Volume doesn't always mean quality or knowledge.

^^ I enjoy a good smile. OP I want one the same as you. Just bought a M305, going to chop and have no muzzle break/flash hider. Not sure what to do for a stock but I did want something with a pistol grip. I saw someone do one with a wood stock and a folding shoulder stock. Update with pics if you can. I need to do mine as cheap as I can. I'm hoping a good smith can do a chop and re crown for reasonable. I'm going 18.75-19 inch.

We cant shoot after daylight?? well thats news to me ?

I'm actually thinking of taking my PWS brake off and putting a flash hider on. I love the recoil management of the brake, the rifle barely has any muzzle lift and is great for follow-up shots.

But the damn thing is so loud people two towns over can tell when I'm shooting! Great for at the range when everyone has ear protection, bit startin to see it's limitation in real world hunting scenarios. I never hunt with ear plugs or muffs, and after one shot from my shorty, my ears will be ringing for the next 18 hours.
