Got a Maverick 88 here on the EE a week or so ago. The plan was to convert it to a more tactical/comp version. I knew there was not many options as to the mag length and other mods but it is still a very nice shotgun to handle.

Started as a 36" barrel. Chopped it down to 24". Reamed and threaded for choke tube and Voila a nice shorty Maverick 88 still useable for hunting or any other sports.

Cheers

Very nice. I've been wanting to do similar to a 500 that I have. Kind of a do it all shotgun. I was thinking 18" vent rib with wad wizard chokes but I suppose 20" would be a better all purpose length.

I have a 12" as well, I can see the confusion....LOL

They are very similar. Same reliability/looseness of the action. The barrel and tube are different, and the safety is on the side.

I have had a Mav 88 since 2001 and put about 500 through it. It had one or two hard extractions where I had to pull very hard on the slide to get the shell out. The main differences are the poly trigger group with the safety as part of it versus the top safety on the Mossberg 500' and 590's. The 500's have a poly trigger assembly too, where as the 590's have an aluminum one. The receiver isn't tapped on the 88, so you are limited with sight options. The front slide is pinned on the 88, which prevents easily changing your forend to a different style. The 88 has the twin extractors that the Mossberg's have, and the same feed guide (which I think makes the Mossberg/Maverick shotguns the easiest to load). The 88 costs less, but to me is a great value if you don't want to spend the money on a 500 or 590.

my shorty shotgun is 12.5" not quite what I expected from the title ahaha. How do the 88s compare to mossbergs?
