I am looking into building a shorty precision rifle. Haven't seen many of these around and I am interested in building one. My 16.5" builds in the past have been fun, and I want to go shorter :D

I'm still a student so its going to be a budget build on a 783 action if I go forward with it.

Here's what I am thinking:

783 SA
MDT LSS
MDT Composite carbine stock
MDT pistol grip
Custom medium profile barrel 12" or 13.5"
SBI Aegis 30 muzzle brake /w shield

My initial guesstimate for cost without optic is around $1500 or so.

Would be similar to my last rifle build but the barrel would be a few inches shorter. It would lighten up the rifle, and make it more compact for med range precision work, and be a good handy general purpose rifle. In NZ these types of rifles are called "Bush Pigs".

If anyone has a build similar I would love to see pics and hear what they have to say on the subject of SBR precision rifles, and what types of loads they are using (faster powders etc).

Looks like a carbine version of the 700 CP is coming to Canada. I'm pretty excited about it! It will be a fun little blaster!

I like what you are going for Driller, I’d like to do something similar. One reason is I find pistol grips more comfortable to hold while at the ready and for stalking. I’m hoping the design you are after will create a very lightweight rifle. Also like the idea of a chassis that will use AR butt stocks and potentially a fore grip. I want to build something that will allow for a good sling to be used. Iron sights for me will not be added due to such a short barrel. I’m torn between 300 Blk and 308 Win.

I picked up the 783 16" in 300BO. It's a fun little gun. Hate the stock but not sure I want to put it into a chassis either. Its nice to carry and points fast.

I'm gonna check in again with Jerry as I am pretty close to figuring out what I want. I'm leaning more towards a rem 700 action right now as it just is more aesthetically pleasing than the 783. This is a rem 700 CP in an lss gen 2 , pretty much exactly what I am going for minus the brace.

I’m going to wait for the remington but I have been researching and like the idea of the LSS chassis. I have seen some nice builds using it online. I’m wanting to do a 308 or a 338 federal with a 12.5 or a 14” barrel

Yea 308 will do ok, it's definitely a compromise , but for me the benefits outweigh the negatives. I rarely shoot at 800m or further, and such a rifle would be a great <700m rifle for target shooting and < 300m rifle for hunting.

I like the concept of this a lot. Have you considered 6.5 Grendel as a calibre? Not overly familiar with it but from reading online it seems to have decent ballistics from short barrels.

I have a 12.5" 5.56 barrel 'leftover' from upgrading my upper to a new calibre that I want to stick on Spectre Ballistics' yet-to-be-released Light Practical Carbine receiver to turn into a similar concept, albeit in a homestead/henhouse varmint defender format :)

Maybe add a folding stock adapter to make it even cooler
Have to watch the OAL though: <660 mm = restricted

If I remember correctly, Arms Tech Ltd came up with something similar around the late 90's. They're the same guys who turned a 300 win Browning bar into a really nice precision rifle.
