Shorty Stevens 300F and 305F Scope Mounting and Accuracy Review UPDATED

bases

Maybe people want to shoot their rifle that day, instead of waiting a week or two for their local gunshop to get the others ordered in. Or maybe they don`t want to buy another set of $60 rings because they need another 10 thou. clearance between their optics and the barrel or sight. As for cutting the screws, they weren`t actually cut, just the very bottom of the taper of the screw was cleaned off. In some cases about 10 thou. Only the face of the cutting disc was used, not the edge.

Hey, I was just thinking about this:
The only difference between that rifle and the mark 2 is the barrel and accu-trigger.
I know a lot of people are drawn to the stevens simply because of the shorter barrel. That being the case, one could always purchase a mark 2 which are dirty cheap and swap the trigger onto it. Sadly, you couldn't legally cut the mark 2 barrel down that much but you could legally put the mark 2 accu-trigger on the stevens if you wanted to.

WSS has 'tactical' gun cases which are just what you're looking for. They're short. I believe they're designed for folding or telescoping stocked guns. They've very short.

Or I could just "bubba" up my own solution!

I just picked one of these up yesterday. I think its one of the best survival rifles out there. I was going to alter it to make it a takedown, but there is no need. Having a removeable barrel for storage would only reduce the length by a couple inches and would require you to have a safe place for the barrel. I think it's best left right where it is.

I did do some work on the trigger though. I could not stand the creepy and gritty 6.5lb trigger pull on it. Now its at a crisp 3.5lb. I did one other mod also. The great hollow in the stock is too good of an opportunity to pass up.

First I removed the two Phillips screws on the butt plate and ground off the four locating tabs on the back side of the plate. This allows the plate to swivel on the top screw.

I then turned down the head of an allen bolt so that it fit snugly inside the bottom screw hole in the butt plate. It wasnt hard screwing the machine screw into the tupperwear stock. Then all I had to do was vertically elongate the bottom screw hole slightly so that it could slip down over the allen screw head.

The butt plate is now a swivelling trap door that locks in place. To open it you just press up on the heel of the stock.

This is not a water proof compartment. But it is quite large. The hollow in the stock narrows down to about 1" x 1.5" for the last 2 or 3", but it goes all the way to the rear of the trigger guard. If you pack things in the correct order, you can fit quite a bit in there.

Here is a list of what is in there and I could pobably cram a fair bit more in there too.

-12ft of paracord
-6ft of snare wire
-Mini bic lighter
-Mid-size Swiss Army Knife
-Fox 40 whistle
-Mini zippo style lighter (If nothing else will start a fire, the lighter fluid soaked cotton will!)
-Innova pinch light with tritium marker (so you can find it in the dark)
-25 rounds of .22lr ammo
-Space blanket in plastic bag
-Button Compass

Thanks!

I mounted a fixed 4x Nikon scope on it and headed out to the range today. Below is an example of the groups I was shooting. The black circle is 1.5 inches and I take all the blame for the flyer at 12 o'clock. Thats from 50m. At about a half inch, I think that is pretty good. I didnt do any paper punching at 100m. But I could break clays from that distance with no trouble. I didnt have too much trouble hitting the broken pieces of clay either.

I like this gun.

**Next thing in store for this rifle is a kylon camo treatment

Nice group, I was hitting my steel target at 275yds with it couple days ago with iron sights.
For as short as the barrel is I'm surprised how accurate these little guns are.

Btt

Just putting this chapter up for another look. I`ve had no time to use the Stevens 300F since the upgrade with accutrigger and wooden stock so it`s on the EE at the moment - cheers.

You should of had that stock on the 305f when you sold it :p
Friend took his GF shooting and she used the stevens 305f and did great with it.
Dandy rifle.

Glad you liked it.

I`m glad you liked the 305F. That one and the 300F were both real half inch group shooters at 50 yards. Amazing with such a short barrel. I`ve got another project on the go so you know the deal... sell something to buy another to keep the wife happy. I was going to do another post on the BL22 micro midas 16 inch barrel but just don`t have the time to get to the range or do much shooting anymore.

got the screws these are #16 weaver bases and med burris rings, the scope is a older 3x9 bushnell that I got off another gun I bought last week. good enough for this.

got it together last night today it's F'n snowing so no target shooting! sighting in ARGH......

EDIT > BTW I like the stock and trigger on yours mine is going to ride in the quad box so the synthetic stock will do.

On a tangent, just where do you order bases from anyway? Rings, I can seem to find, but the Weaver bases are a different matter. I don't feel like coughing up 40 bucks plus whatever shipping and taxes on top for the EGW one-piece mount, despite how slick it looks.

I found that using the 5 shot Savage mag that I bought at Cabelas ($17 @ the new store in Edmonton) makes the Savage easier on the back for carrying with a sling and actually more comfortable for me when shooting. I'll use the 10 shot for plinking although not being an autoloader, its easy to switch mags after 5 shots.

Anybody else having feeding issues with their mags? The 10 rounder that came with mine would fail to feed the last round every time. No matter how fast or deliberate I worked the bolt. Only the last round. So I bought a new mag. Same deal. I looked online and discovered that if you double up the springs, it'll help and so I did. Now I have an 10 round mag with no spring and one with two. It works better, but about 25% of the time, the last round still hangs up.

Any thoughts?
