shot a deer with 90gr .243 nosler ballistic tip?

I've got 95gr partition, but accuracy is not as good. They would be ok for lungshots to maybe 200 yds, but the bt's are shooting moa to 300 yds.
For all practical purposes the partition might be accurate enough, but I don't have the confidence in them that the bt gives me for placement.
I might try some other powders behind the partitions.

243 ai

I have used the 243 since it first came out and have found that the lighter bullets will not shoot through mature deer size animals .bullets in the 85-90 gr weight shoot best in most 1-10 twist barrels but 100 gr bullets hit harder and are better for large white tail 1 built a 243 ai with a 1-8 twist so i could shoot the heavy 115 gr bullets from burger. Last fall this combo shot 1 large body white tail buck and 3 caribou all one shot kills but i still am not sure that i like this bullet as well as the 100 gr interlock or the partions when i look at the resulting wounds.i think that for a hunting bullet we owe it to the animal to use the best constructed ,heaviest bullet our rifle will shoot.at best the 243 is a 300 yd dear gun so if it shoots a 1 1/2 inch group at 100 yd so be it

IMHO,I too think it is light for deer. I've shoot a couple deer & my son shot his first with the 243. As I hunt in open area & ranges can easy be 300yds, too many deer run to far with 6mms. The BT bullet workes great on coyotes. If you need to use the 243 a better bullet is the wa to go. Good luck & let us know how it workes out.

A freind has the best summary of NBTs and NPTs as deer bullets I've come across.

Partitions: Kill quickly, leave one hell of a mess, probably exit, and can be tough to get to shoot.

Ballistictips: Kill like lightning, leave one hell of a mess, probably won't exit on the smaller calibers, and are usually boreingly easy to get to shoot.

Take your pick, a mess with 1 hole or 2, in a very dead jumper. We have cranked NBTs up past 3600 fps, and the bullet aways seems to make it to the other side. Deer go down like a popped balloon.

I seldom miss a chance to sneak this picture in, but it's a fair example of what a kid with a 100 gr Ballistictip can do. Granted, a .243 can only fantasize about the velocites.

I worked on a deer farm that shot deer in the feild, I culled deer on commercial forest and forestry commission land in Scotland, England and Northern Ireland. I was a member of four different stalking syndicates.
I don't know how many of the eight different species of deer I've shot, but its a lot.
The vast majority of these deer were shot with the .243 and 100gr bullets(legal minimum in most of the UK).
I have only got into tinkering with lighter bullets since I came to AB.
There is no doubt in my mind about the capabilities of the .243, I just wondered if anyone had used the same bullet as I'm loading right now.

I have shot ballistic tip (95) grain out of an a-bolt .243 for the past 6 or 7 years and to a "t" they have been spot on deadly. The knockdown power has been more than impressive and there have been several who had not so much as moved after a chest shot. There is a substantial amount of collateral damage around the entry wound but I don't fuss about losing some rib meat for the sake of a quick and clean kill. Load em, shoot em in the right spot and break out the camera - you'll need it.

I love my 6MM Rem for most deer hunts. Never had a problem with that bullet. Flies well and drops deer.

The only bullet I avoid from the 243/6MM line is the A-Frame or Partition type bullets. Front half sheers off too quickly and no penetration. Had to chase deer every time. Never experienced this problem with any other type of bullet for the 6MM.

this guy didn't like the 55gr NBT I hit him with. I'm sure a 90gr woulda worked even better

btw bullet DID exit, broadside @ 3500 fps impact

Hello and sorry, you say you have recovered 150gr ballistic tips in whitetails?

Was it the the second that got the shotgun pattern of fragments?

Ballistic tips are for things you don't want to eat.

I can't tell you much regarding 6mm but I've loaded them for a friend in 300 Win Mag. These were 150 grain Noslers and right near the max. They performed very good on Whitetails. Mushroomed nicely and retained most of their weight. Up until I had seen that I was somewhat skeptical but now that I've recovered a couple bullets I would not be afraid to try them. Seeing that I only got drawn for mule does this year I think my 243 Ack will be coming out and I will try some 95gr Nosler/Win ballistic tips.

I have used a .243 for deer for some time now. I believe in heavy for calibre bullets. Hornady's 105 A max is excellent as is Remington's 100 gr Corelokt. Lately I have settled on Hornady's 100 grain round nose @ around 2900fps. Excellent penetration, accuracy (from my remmy 700) and very dead deer. I have considered the 85 and 90 grainers but after using the 100 gr round nose I will use no other.

regards, Darryl
