Shot by my own shot....(why I always wear glasses)

I finally had the chance this afternoon to knock some rust off and shoot 4 rounds of skeet. I was shooting Station 2 - High house. I called for the bird, pulled the trigger and hit either the front or back end of the bird (don't recall exactly because...) As soon as I pulled the trigger I felt a nasty sting in my upper left leg. I've been hit by spin arounds before (BB spins around the lip of the bird and comes back at you), but never so damn hard. I looked at the receiver of my gun to make sure I didn't have a kaboom and flying reciever parts (I didn't).

Initial inspection was a #9 shot sized blood blister looking mark on my leg. A few hours later it grew to be a pretty good welt.

Moral of the story... wear your damn shooting glasses when you are anywhere near the field. If your kids are watching from behind... make sure they have their glasses on too. It makes me sick to watch people shooting targets with no glasses. It's not the first time I've been hit, nor will it be the last time. It is just a matter of time until you do get hit.

Be Safe!

Brad.

It's a real son - of - a - gun when your own targets return fire. You could have joined the army for that experience, and be paid for your trouble. You are so right about the eye protection. After reading this I may take to wearing a can as well.

Absolutely damn right. Last year one of my pellets struck a good friend who was standing ten feet behind me at a sporting station. The pellet went into the outer layer of skin on his neck. He bled a little but was none the worse for wear. Had he not been wearing eye protection and the pellet had been a few inches higher he'd be blind in one eye.

... Glad yer arright, but dude, I can't help but find some small amount of humor in it.

No doubt. Everyone on the squad had a pretty good laugh at my expense ( I may have let a curse word go when I got hit). In reality I got off pretty lucky. A few inches up and over would have been 'rather uncomfortable'.

Moral of the story: Break the damn bird harder and it won't have the opportunity to shoot you back. :D

Bradlief, is this just a ploy to get out of cleanup day at the club Saturday morning?
Don't forget to get some Wasp killer for low 3, or send the Cadets in there to move targets.

Our club DEMANDS both hearing and eye protection for everyone even near the line.
We keep extra glasses in the scoring shack so nthere is no excuses.
No weary, no shooty!

I think George Ford still has a piece of clay stuck in the forend of one of his guns from high 7!
Showers from the eights are common too, but I have never been hit with a spin around....

Same at our club but there are no shortage of people who become very unhappy when told to either put on safety glasses or vacate the premises.

What really gets my back up is clay target shooters who bring their kids out to watch daddy shoot and while THEY are fully outfitted their kids just a few feet away don't have eye protection.

Yup, I get the same excuses, and unhappy people.

Nothing I love more than to say "no sir, these are the rules.
I have to insist that you sign in now, and put your ear and eye protection on NOW, before you do any shooting".
Personal protective equipment is the most important gear I own, be it my floater suits for the boat, seat belts , grinding sheils, or kust a set pf ear plugs!

Brad:

Same deal about 10 years back ... at 2 High - 1/2 a #9 pellet came back and embedded itself in my left temple. "Exciting" to say the least. Took a couple of minutes to work it out with a pair of forceps. No problems, but always have and always will keep the Decots on ... either while shooting, refereeing or spectatating !

So........you FINALLY managed to hit something HARD huh Brad?.......... YOURSELF!!!!!!!!!!! LOL. Just kidding buddy. Glad you're OK. :)

Never had a spin around but have had target pieces from neighboring range take a little chunk out of my brothers ear.
I also kinda blew up a remington 308 pump one hot summer day athe rifle range. Had i not been wearing glasses or had there been someone directly beside me it could have been bad. Bolt didn't lock up properly and blew a new hole out the base of the case back into the receiver sending the plastic bolt cover into tiny little peices.
Can you say WAKE_UP CALL!

Glad to hear your ok, your 100% right on the eye protection, I can vouch for that, i've never been hit with shot yet, but I've shot myself with 22lr, 357 mag and 44 mags, that bounced back off steel targets, I've also had an antique revolver chain fire (that was probably my own fault but still), and had an old 10 gauge pierce a primer blowing gas back into the action which removed a piece of the stock which landed over 20 feet away, imagine catching that in the forehead. Oh and I've been using a perfectly good 22 with not so good old imperial 22 short ammo and had the back of the brass split sending either brass or powder bouncing off my face.

If anyone makes an arguement about eye protection there is lots of reasons.

first post !

Hi all,

I've been reading a lot on this forum and never really had the urge to add my 2 cents...but I now want to add a comment about eye protection...

I have been hit pretty hard with bounce back pellets from low powered pellet guns...BB.s are the worst for that...and I know at least 4 guys who have lost an eye while driving after getting a rock in the windshield so I am in the habit of wearing some sort of eye protection while driving...in fact I feel naked without it...eeewwwwww...I cant stress enough about how important eye protection is IMO...you just never know...until its too late...I blew up my Dads old Ugartechea SXS whren I was a kid...luckly no one was near...ricochets can go ANYWHERE with rifles & shotguns and pistols...so always watch your background and foreground and all around for potentially unsafe bystanders...and ALWAYS wear eye protection when shooting.
