shot collector for shotgun

not sure if this is the spot for this or not but here it goes

im looking at making some type of shot collector for shotgun shooting just to collect the lead ... will be use for slugs ... would something like ar500 steel work ... i have easy access to 1/2 inch ar500, 5/8 inch ar500, 3/4 inch ar450 and 1 inch mild steel

You can likely get away with much cheaper steel. I built a .22 trap out of scraps last summer for the hunt camp, just a beefed up pellet trap design. The mild steel I salvaged was under 3/16", and showed no damage from .22, I tried a jhp .357 and while it bulged the back, I trust it would hold up for a decent while.
If you're salvaging material like I did, may not be an issue, if you're buying steel, shaving 1/8" will be huge savings in cost and weight.

If it is for slugs a sanbank or sand box would do.
