Hi Folks,

I've cast some 7/8 LEE Keydrive slugs and have a basic question:
Can I use 7/8oz shot data from my reloading manuals for the 7/8oz slug?

Cheers!

P.S.
Using Winchester AA hulls, have Greendot and Unique powder- only looking to go under 1300 fps for now, hot trap recipe maybe?

1shot,

In a word, yes. The key factor with the Drive-Key;) or any slug, is that you have to find a load for 7/8 oz. that uses a wad that will fit the slug.

Do you have a copy of the Lyman Shotshell manual? Look through it for a load that uses your powder, shell and a wad that will fit the slug and allow you to get a good crimp on the shell. You will likely have to use a cardboard wad over the slug to improve the crimp.

I haven't had a chance to dig out load you asked for, but I haven't forgotten.

Been tinkering with these for the little while. I used the the load data that came with the mould. I've loaded 100 or so with 38 grains of hs-6. recomend using nitro cards, over shoy cards or filler wads under the slug.the wads have a tendancey to stick to the slugs.

Have you checked the Lee manual? The Lyman manual has loads for the Lyman cast slugs; I do not have the Lee manual, but it would be logical that the Lee slugs would be in there.

Sadly I do not have a Lyman or Lee manual.
Right now I'm looking for a slowish recipe with this 7/8 slug inside of an "AA" hull using the waa12sl wad and Unique powder.

Tonights web-based research from Castboolits and the Slugshooters forum suggests between 21 and 23gr of Unique- which sounds about right for 1.1/8 oz of shot at trap speeds. I imagine that would put a 7/8oz slug at maybe 1400fps?
Any thoughts on this?

This evening after work I was able to give these slugs a test run..

I am VERY impressed by the results.
At 50 yards using smoothbore/bead sight and skeet2 choke it was easy make a 4 inch, 8 shot group in dusk/low light conditions.

The recoil was "sharp" but easily bearable with 21 grains of Greendot.

Just for sh**s and giggles/experimental purposes, with two of the reloads I had actually glued the slug to the wad- to try the old "rock in a sock" idea. Both of these totally missed the 3'x3' target. (I imagine the wad curled up on exiting the bore) My loads have a couple of circles of cardboard beneath the slug for correct height and to prevent the slug sticking and described above.

So there it is, I believe the 7/8 Lee Drive-Key slug is excellent.. Pics/results this weekend.
