I have have been looking for a cheap shot gun for the up coming bird season, and I came across trade ex Canada I see the have a lot of cheap sxs and o/u shot guns above and below the $200 range, I just want to know because I have not herd of many of the brands and in the discription it says pitting and cracks ??? Are they non firing ? Thanks

Site sponsor TradeEx has got great deals on a bunch of older European bird guns, as you have found. I honestly don't know where they got them all!

You need to read the description for each one you're interested in, because some do have minor problems, but importantly, not all have 2-3/4" (70mm) chambers for using common modern shells. Apart from any that might note missing hammers, broken firing pins, and so on, they should all be functional guns.

As for makes, many are of the brand JABS (Just Another Belgian Shotgun) or AOSS (Any Old Spanish Shotgun). The point being, there have been many factories making these through the years, and many different brands attached to guns from the same factories. The guns I have seen there represent really good value in the market, with a wide selection and lower prices than you're likely to see elsewhere for the same, but they're not just putting out a crate full o' guns and all at one price; the cheaper ones listed are generally not as good as the higher ones.

They are likely old shotguns with cracked stocks and pitted barrels, they are listed as good to very good condition, but I question that. My advice to spend a little more money and spend $400 or $500 on a Remington or Mossberg pump action. Just my .02 cents.

Andrew.

Read the descriptions carefully too, some are chambered in 2.5" shells...bit tough to find these days. I had mine reamed to accept 2 3/4" shells as it wasn't a collector grade gun by any stretch of the imagination but still a really nice under-lever. Missing hard parts can create a whole new challenge for you, new wood can be found with a bit of effort.

I do have a 870, but I'd like a cheap sxs or over under that I can bang around, thanks

Can't afford a decent shot gun, you can't afford to hunt. Cost of the shells will quickly outdo your investment in the weapon. ;)

also watch for Damascus (laminated steel) barrels, they cant stand up as well to the modern or higher pressure rounds. quite a bit of the older cheaper double barrels are Damascus and potentially useless/dangerous for your intended purpose.

someone with more knowledge on the matter can correct me if i'm wrong, I just think it could have been something easily overlooked :ninja:

Its not that I can't aford to hunting or buy a $3000 browning I could but like I said before I want a cheap gun to bang around, thanks to everybody with constructive input !

There are a couple damascus barrels, i picked up a russian sxs that works awesome, but cant put steel shot through these old guns, too hard on them and the chokes.

Not long ago like about 1987 everyone used lead still for everything, so the past 20 yrs or so guns have had to put titanium chokes in to be compatable, steel is still a fairly new thing, they still havent quite perfected it yet. So my guess you were looking to shoot steel, your gonna need to buy a newer gun thats compatable and they are not cheap.

Ive seen some of the Optima, Hatsun shotguns available for $280.00 brand new. They have fairly good reviews for a lower price shotgun.

haven't seen titanium chokes....do you mean titanium nitride coating? (usually gold in colour)...titanium, while tough, is relatively soft, i'd expect it to gall badly...

my bush/bird gun is a stoeger/IGA "coach gun"SXS 12 gauge 20 inch barrels im happy with it for 350ish I paid for it brand new, nice walnut stock, good bluing, gun feels solid locks up nice. anything cheaper I was very unimpressed with, I looked at a norinco SXS and the safety didn't work from brand new and the fit and finish and general feel of it was terrible, and it wasn't much cheaper either.

don't go too cheap on a new firearm. its not like the old days where a cheap gun is functionally fine and just lacks a bit in the fit and finish. NO. there is some really cheap junk out there these days, not just in guns either, power tools are a good example.

so either buy a middle of the road new gun, or better yet IMO, spend less or the same on a better quality used gun.

Remember why sxs and o/u guns are not cheap, because each one has to line up perfectly to one another and that is time consuming and time is $, good luck trying to find a sxs or ou thats cheap, steel compatable and dependable
