So last night I took my first buck. It was about 6pm and we came across 3 mule deer in a small cut. As soon as I saw bone on the head I was out of the truck. I shot it with my M14, 73yds, standing, open sights. The bullet broke his spine right above his shoulders.

He was just a spiker but he dressed out at 95lbs. He's at the butchers now so I should have some nice roasts in a couple days :D

I'll post pics when my buddy gets them developed. I forgot my Digital and he's kinda living in the past.

Congratulations!! Your first deer will remain indelibly etched in your memory for all your life. Even though I shot my first one in 1958, I can still close my eyes and see the terrain, the open area that the deer moved into, the fall smells and colors, the big Fir tree I used for a rest, the movement of those open sights as I tried to settle down, the reaction of the deer at the shot, and the exhilaration of seeing my first deer on the ground. The eating is like the icing on the cake. Regards, Eagleye.

Good for you wally!,

You'll enjoy that young buck as we all enjoyed our first big game animal, getting our first prize....:)

Dont forget to share it with friends and family.

It's the greatest thing a hunter can do to promote the sport.:)

:D Thanks for the kind words fellas!

It was a little jaded because I had cleaned a few deer before but actually taking the shot your self is quite a rush. I think, if anything, it just made me love that M-14 even more. What a great rifle :D

I'm thinking good timing because a deer roast will be awesome for thanksgiving weekend!!! :dancingbanana:

As I said, I'll post pics as soon as I get em.

Congratulations,

I'm only 28 but I'm not quite sure which deer was my first. I did my CORE at 11 and hunted at 12. I got a spike or LEH doe pretty much every year when I was a kid and I stopped hunting for a while "when I grew up" because of school and work.

My favorite deer so far was getting back into it over the last couple years and getting a nice little 3 point whitetail at about 60 yards on ~Nov. 15 last year. I was on a camping trip with my old man and although I've done the same trip with the same group a few times, last year was my favorite. I hunted hard for 4 days before I saw my first buck and it only seemed right. Most of the deer as a kid were standing on some far back road looking at me, waiting for me.

There's nothing wrong with getting a small deer for food, It's about your attitude towards hunting that matters. I've never shot a buck of any significant size but that doesn't really matter to me and I love being out there.

Just always keep the attitude of loving to be out there and it's a fantastic hobby.
