Shot my first young buck. Shaken up after a malfunction.

cosmic, bear in mind that when I say 'dummy round' I'm not talking about the old method of little neck tension and inserting a bullet and letting it seat where it does; I'm building it based on what I measured the OAL to be at the lands with the Sinclair OAL gauge. Now obviously something went wrong here so I'm going to figure out why and I'll be giving myself more margin for error by not reloading hunting loads this close again, and cycling all hunting loads at the range. All said a lesson it might otherwise have taken some years to figure out.

It is also the last time Ill be ignoring a slightly tight closing bolt EVER.

Maybe some day ill consider a lever or a pump although I really did take that first shot planning to miss; pretty sorry that I did and thankful I did not wound the deer. Happy that my second one went right through the heart.

BTW cosmic, you were right. 3.5 lb of trigger weight seemed fine with gloved hands sitting in a blind on a cold morning :-;

Actually, I believe 5 of the 6 were self inflicted darwinism..

By the people that seem to prefer semi autos,levers, and pumps.

Oh... And I live in a province where we actually hunt instead of shooting at living targets from the side of the road after putting our double doubles down....

Come and try a week long backpack hunt for bighorn sheep, or a horseback hunt in the wilderness, and let us know how that compares to your hunting.

I happen to use that old method, and it seems to work better for me, than using the Sinclair OAL gauge is working for you.

Agreed on the action choices... Not that only "slob hunters" use those actions... But they certainly are the preferred choice of that crew...

I have done many tough hunts and have loved them all... Road hunts have never been part of my equation...

Bottom line is that deer season seems to bring out the worst in all "hunters"... Regardless of province...

I was really surprised at how many 4 shot volleys I heard while hunting. No doubt the folks were 'dogging' while we were hunting from a blind. I mean, I'm embarrassed to have had to have taken a second shot and feel fortunate that I didn't injure the deer on the first. I guess when you have a deer on the move at some speed the likely hood of missing and thus needing a follow up is much higher.

It really did surprise us that whomever was hunting in nearby areas was shooting as much as they were in succession.

No argument there. I might have saved myself some money and time doing it the old way and triple checking.

Well - Maybe the deer was going "down the line". You realize you were likely the beneficiary of the efforts of some of those doggers, or real hounds. Many of the local lads up here are "meat hunters", just as their parents and grandparents were. Arguing the merits of ethical shots with them is not likely to bear fruit.
