I might stir up a lot of shizen with this one, but who here shoots different places then the typical heart/lung shot?? I personally hate it when i have to track deer, so anything out to 200 yards, i usually shoot in the neck or head. I personally like placing a bullet right between the eyes of a deer at 100 yards or less. no wasted meat. no tracking job and instant death. Am I one of the few that does this? or am i one of the few that is frowned upon in todays hunting society? Everything you see on tv says, Go for the heart lung shot , and then the run for a while.

I dislike tracking too, thats why I shoot for the biggest vital area I can, things happen, and small vital area's can lead to a critter with a bullet hole in a non vital area. I prefer tracking 100 yards to tracking 2 miles. I'm not judging your choices here, just explaining mine.

Spinal shots

In my moose camp, I'm the best shot, but the worst woodsman. I'm always getting spun around out there, and if I got my eyes down tracking, then there's always a search party for me. That being said, I go for a spinal/hump shot. I've been pretty successful/lucky with the deer and spinal shots as well. The lads call my old Sako 30.06 'The Chiropractor.'

Does it count if you aim for the heart/lungs, but consistently get the spine??? 220gr. 30-06 doesnt let them walk... at all, they just kinda drop and flop. My only other hit was mid front leg half way above the knee... made it 2 stumbles before shot #2 hit the spine.

I try... but excitement gets the better of me it seems :(

a deers brain as only about the size of an apple.not to many guys can sya thy can hit that at 100 yards of hand with enough sureaty to do it every time so why would you .if you end up blowing the deers noies off you will be tracking a lot longer then 100 yards.the high shoulder shot is a much better choice to put them down DUTCH

I can't do it off hand. So I don't. I use a rest of some sort. Log, rock, backpack, what ever there is. All of my rifles shoot sub-moa at 100 yards. I know exactly where that round is going. If I don't feel comfortable with a head shot, I'll do a neck shot and blow it's spine out. Again with the high shoulder shots. Might be for you. But not for me.

I don't have a problem with it if you've found it works for you....go for it. I myself aim for the vitals, but if the situation arises I'd take it's head off as well, I don't aim spine just not experienced with that shot.
Hunting is a personal thing in my books, do it your way and enjoy your time outdoors.

Heart/lung for the simple reason that it gives the highest margin of error. Animals rarely go more than 35-50 yards and always leave a huge blood trail.

In the field things go wrong and I don't like losing animals. I take the highest percentage shot possible.

Hitting the spine of a deer will send blood trauma through the tenderloins. I prefer to hold behind the front leg on the ribs in front of the diaphragm. With Partition or Ballistic Tips, shots in the boiler room will blow out the other side and the lungs deflate or pool up.

so far ive taken the lung shots on all my big game, farthest ive had to track was 20 yards, i get minimal meat loss and they bleed out a bit making my job a bit easier in the end.

I shot one front to back through the neck with a 45-70 from a handful of yards 'cuz it was facing me and had my scent.

Damn near took her head off.

Do whatever works. Dead is dead and the only difference is how much meat goes to waste.

just behind ears,up the neck is the shot i'm always looking for....i hate tracking too, not counting i'd rather get a clean and instant fall, than make it suffer .

if i cant get at least a 85-90% sure shot, i run over it and wait.

i only hunt deers,so i can wait, there's no deer shortage around here lol.
