shot shell lengh?

hi i'm look at buying a 870 supermag then moding.
my question is what parts of the gun makes it a supermag?
i don't want to lose the ability to fire 3 1/2 shells.

I believe the receiver's ejection port is lengthened, and the barrel's chamber is 3/12in.

so as long as i stick with 3 1/2 barrels i'll be good changing lenght.
i won't be changing reciever.

You likely wont be able to use any barrel but a 3 1/2 inch.

I think the barrels with shorter chambers are compatible with the supermag just not vice versa and don't shoot 31/2 shells in any barrel not marked for them.

I think that 2 3/4 and 3 inch 870 barrel will work on the Super Mag action, but one should not fire 3 1/2 inch in a chamber not designated such and one should not fire 3 inches in a chamber not designated such. I think that a 3 1/2 barrel will fit and work on a magnum receiver or non magnum receiver but should not be fired with ammo not designated for the reciever.

Yup. I have one I bought brand new. It has a 3 inch reciever but a 3 1/2 inch barrel. It's stamped not for use with magnum recievers.
