shot size for ruffed grouse

Most of my grouse were taken after they flush up a tree. For this purpose any size shot will do, just aim above the head so the bottom of your pattern takes the bird down. When I was a kid I used a full choke single shot .410 or a 22, always with a head shot.

I've never found more than 3 or 4 pellets in a bird thus far. In the early days I used a full choke .410; in later years a cylinder bore 12 muzzle loader.

I use an Imp Mod in my 12G works fantastic.

7 1/2 or 8 won't rip them apart as much as the larger sizes. I prefer 6's for Sharptails though.
