So what do you guys mostly use for shooting trap and skeet? What Size? I bought 8 shot today 1 1/4 ounce 2 3/4. What is the difference between 1 ouce and 1 1/4. I need a long explanation on this:D

Ok I read the wiki thing. It said for trap 7 1/2 because it is a longer distance. For skeet or your a buddy throwing your clays for you a 8 or 9 works best. It still has no explanation on the ounces of a shotshell. What is the difference between 1 ounce and 1 1/4 ounce......

one quarter ounce more pellets. Not terribly complicated. More pellets means more are hitting your target, making it more likely to break. A lower number indicates bigger pellets, that hit with more energy per pellet, but weigh more, so there will be less pellets.

#9 shot = 585 pellets per oz
#8 shot = 410 pellets per oz
#7.5 shot = 350 pellets per oz
for 1.25 ounces, simply multiply accordingly.

Although #9 has more pellets (more chances of hitting the clay), because each pellet is smaller, they decelerate faster (and therefore have less range). Hence the use of #7.5 shot for longer range Trap shooting (approx 40yds, vs approx 15-25yds for skeet).

Some trap/Skeet clubs won't allow the 1 1/4oz. payload, these days it's considered a hunting load, at was the std. for trap many years ago. The extra recoil and shot is not req'd anyways. Most clubs require 1 1/8oz. or smaller, and 7 1/2 to 9 shot.

When my son and I went to the club for the first time we did not know anything about the game. We just wanted to shoot plain and simple. After a while one of the older guys was watching my son and he asked if he could teach him something. And I said yes that we would be honored Oh and he told me to pay attention to, that I might learn something . He was about 14 at the time. So after shooting twice a week and going through about a bag of shot a week our mentor could see that it was starting to add up and he did not want to lose his up and coming star he suggested to me to down load the rounds to 1oz instead of 1 1/8 for him and down from 1 1/4 for me (hunting load ) so I did and we really did not know or feel the difference. We stayed with 7 1/2 to 8 size shot same price no matter what size shot bag .With the saving on both the shot and the powder we were able to stay in the game until hormones and something else came along. Teenage girls who knew and now I have to wait till he understands they all got one and its a good place to to get away from them hahahahha
