It seems to me that I've asked that question before but cannot remember who said what and the dreaded search turned up notta.

My question (again?) is who has tested various shot through a rifled barrel and what were your results? I'm curious to the effects mostly with larger shot from #4 buck up through 000 buck. I would also be interested in small shot and what the patterns looked like and how bad fouling in the rifling was. Thanks all. :)

If it is life or death and all you have is 00 Buck as you ran out of 2 boxes of $20 slugs then ya go for it.

Thanks for your valued input.

I have no desire at this time to do it, well maybe the odd battery, but I was curious as to the results.

Not sure of this but your biggest problem might be plastic build up in the rifling.

I've done it just to see and your shot group gets wild it flings out into a large pattern. We all load with wads now a days so you end up with some plastic on the rifleing, nothing a bore brush won't remove. Same thing happens with sabots with your slugs and under size bullets in your muzzle loader.

I load a few shot shells for my 45-70 for partridge when I go deer hunting. they do not hold very many 7 1/2,s and shoot a very poor pattern, but they will stop a partridge if it is no more than 15ft. away. better than shooting them with a 300gr. flat nose.

Try 000 buckshot? ;)

just curious what this would do the the rifling if anything? i guess since the lead is so soft it wont really harm it but if anyone knows for sure i'd like to hear from experience.

I think if the pattern was like a donut that would be perfect! You would never have to lead anything or even aim, you would automatically hit everthing if you were a bad shot! HAHA

Peculiar isn't it? I wonder if the effects would be the same with a buffered load of smaller shot? The buffering would pack it in tighter and keep (in theory?) the shot in the center of the column in the middle on impact. I may just try this one day. The only reason I would even think of smaller shot is I figured you could go from deer to birds with a quick swap of a shell, but considering more birds escape me already...:p
