Quick question for you shotgun experts. I need a pistol grip shotgun for work (Bear Gun) and I was hoping someone might know which one of the factory units is the most compact and lightest while still being 100% non restricted?

Thanks in advance for the responses.

Best bet for value and purpose is a 12" or 14" Nork with a Knoxx stock.
Or go pricey and get an 8.5" Dlask with a Knoxx stock. Picture at left.
Most useful, all the advantage of the pistol grip with the versatility of a stocked shotgun; the only disadvantage is having to explain it is non-restricted!

Bears!

The last thing you want on a shotgun when a bear is charging you is a pistol grip.

It would be hard enough to hit a bear running toward you with a full stock.

Grips look cool, and make a compact shotgun, but are not very realistic for practical shooting.

cant aim as easily- shooting shotgun has lots of us automatically try bring it to shoulder. Pistol grip is nice if you have no other option, but Knoxx has some with pistol grips and collabsible but stock (think M4). Whatever you do, if you get a knoxx stock, get the recoil reducing ones, slugs feel like 4.5. your shoulder will thank you

Brenden, Ive got a maverick 88 cruiser pistol grip and its now my go-to defensive gun. The only thing to remember is hold it out infront of you, so your arms are just unlocked. this puts enough room between the pistol grip and your face to safely fire it while using the bead sight. You wouldnt hold a handgun right infront of your face to fire it, would you? Just put your forward hand as far back on the forend as you can and use both arms to absorb the recoil, this takes all the stress and shockload off your trigger hand so you can shoot high volume without getting sore. The mossberg 500/maverick 88 receiver is lightweight aluminum and the gun is so light with a pistol grip, I used to go hiking with it just carring it in my hands without it getting heavy, now Ive got a sling and its nothing to pack all day. And as a few good men have discovered, its one tough ass shotgun, and one of the least expensive. A good pair of mechanics gloves with padding in the palm helps too, just remember to hold it out infront as far as you can without locking your arms and you'll be fine. It does take a little getting used to, but the compact size and lightweight make it so worth it. Hope this helps

All the advice in the world won't beat experience, and that is exactly as it should be.

You're going to have to find out for yourself anyway...

So, you're going to do what so many of us have done -- get yourself a pistol grip for your 14 - 20" barreled shotgun, try it out, and if you like it, use it. They're cheap enough. And they do look cool.

:shotgun:

Or, if you are like me and so many others, try it out, chuckle a bit, take it off again, either get yourself a Knoxx [HIGHLY recommended] or put the regular stock back on it, and put the PG on your shelf, 'cause you never know . . . you might need that sh!t again someday.

Have fun, take pics and show us what you come up with!

12 Gauge shorty

I have just purchased the Outlaw Grizzly. It has a 8.5 inch barrel and with the pistol grip is only 18 inches long, with the full stock it is 27 inches. Seems pretty cool but I have not yet had a chance to shoot it. I also have a Mosberg maveric and have shot it with the pistol grip. Kicks like hell and is very hard to hit anything, this is why I went with the grizzly because the grizzly is about the same lengh as the mosberg. Thats my opinion. Good luck.

Shorter is not always better.

I suggest an 18" barreled 870 (or clone). With a full stock. They handle well and don't weigh that much more than something with a shorter barrel.

As a bear gun, I don't suggest the latest tactical cool sights. Leave the bead on it and stick some slugs in your pocket. When you have an angry mama bear tearing at you, the basics will work. A whole hell of a lot better than something with bells and whistles hanging off of it.
