I have a remington 870 express synthetic model that i want to put some tactical accessories on but don't know what to choose for it. I like the look of the top folding stock with pistol grip, heat shield, pistol grip forend, and shot shell holder for the reciever but i have heard that it hurts to shoot with the folding stock. Any reconmendations for some good accessories? What do you guys like on your shotguns?

here is my shotgun (it is a mossberg500 but all the parts are interchangable with 870)

ATI heat shield /w ghost rings
Choate Top Folding Stock
ATI Front Pistol Grip
TacStar SideSaddle
Cheap Flashlite/Laser Combo i got from ebay for 5 bucks

i also find this top folder stock to be very good to shoot with, doesnt hurt at all

I think the first question is what do you want it for? If you know what you need your gun to do then what type of accesorise you need will be easier for people to recommend. And by "good" do you mean good looking like bad ass, or good as in quality and functional. It seems that in the gun world (and most hobbies) that there is usually a big difference. There is a lot of junk out there that is sold as "tactical" for shotguns that is not very usefull, NOT used by any Real World users in LE and Military and in somecases made very poorly as well.

I want to just use it for plinking and want to stick with the bead sight. As in good i would like good quality and the bad ass looks along with it functioning good. It would also be nice to have it look like a real police or military shotgun.

thanks

Most modern Police shotguns are plain jane wood stocked or basic synthetic with no goodies. Some departments add parts such as custom stocks, sidesaddle shell carriers, Surefire Forend lights, Ghost ring sites, sling, and a mag extension if the gun is not ordered with one from the factory. Folding stocks do not seem to be too common since most of the ones available are not made very well and they are not as nice to shoot as solid stocks. Pistol grip only stocks do not seem to get much use either do to the fact that they do not allow the gun to be fired quite as accurately and the recoil is more severe for the user. Most of the above accesories are more commonly seen on SWAT team guns and not on the average patrol gun in a cruiser.

The modern military does not and has not really used shotguns on a large scale. The rifle has always been the primary weapon. In cases where shotguns are used they have typically been similar to Police versions with the addition (in some cases) of a heat shield on the barrel and a bayonet mount. Most of the other parts are the same as Police/Civilian accesories. Personally I don't care for most of the stuff Tac Star and ATI turn out, although TacStars sidesaddles are a deal. Choate also has some good and bad stuff.

www.wilsoncombat.com builds shotguns and uses various accesories as options
www.vangcomp.com also customizes shoguns
www.remintonle.com shows a few of the optional parts on some models
www.surefire.com for all your lighting needs
http://www.armorholdings.com/productsdiv/speedfeed.asp this is where you will find those pistol gripped full stocks that you see on a lot of guns

In the end you will find that most real world shotguns don't have to much stuff on them, and if your not carefull you will go down the road ($) many before have and end up with more money spent on parts (scopes on shotguns? come on) than the gun it self and it will only be heavier and not shoot as well as when you started out. Lot of people and stores I know have parts bins with various "crap" they tried over the years that ended up being useless, only to end up using the gun the way it was before buying the new wonder addition.

I own an 870 with the factory forlding stock and it's the same gun we use at work (armored truck co). There is a big difference in recoil with this stock with full loads. During practice, we use Winchester Ranger low recoil Buck Shot and it makes a difference (especially for the smaller guys and girls), but on the road we use full loads. The folding stock is good for us because it takes less space in the trucks. Do not get the Butler Creek folding stock. A few of the shotguns a work have those and it's a ##### to shoot with full loads. It has sharp corners where the swivel is and bites the second knuckle of you tumb.

k i've decided I will go with the forend on the wilson combat sight that has the flash light built right into it and one of those buttstocks that looks like an AR stock and a shell holder for the reciever. Where would I get each of these and how much would they cost?

** nevermind about the foregrip, found it and it's way out of my price range

thanks again

from what i have seen and read, this is what i plan to do to my rem 870 when i get it.
18 inch bbl
+2 mag extention
6rnd side sadle
and probably a sling of some kind.
just plain and simple

I think the two best additions for a 'tactical' or police type shotgun are the surefire integrated forgrip and a good set of ghost ring sights for shooting slugs. If you can't afford the good stuff, save up until you can - don't put a bunch of cheap crap on your gun.

For a number of reasons, always use the same ammo during practice as you would in a live confrontation.

A Scattergun jumbo head safety, or a Vang big speed safety is also a worthy addition to your gun.

Regards.

Where were you when I bought that stupid butler folder? LOL ..ohhhh my bruised face.....:p

Ghost rings are awesome...my new mossy has them stock and I am placing slugs quite/very well dispite my crappy shooting skills

What about the ATI line of accessories? Are they any good?

No.

I've had ATI stocks for shotguns and SKS - they work exactly how they're supposed to, but they're sort of junky and cheap. They are also (for me) uncomfortable to shoot.

Speedfeed is great, Choate is ok too.

I fully agree with the idea of practicing with the same load that you will use on the streets, but unfortunetly I dont make the rules for practice and qualifications...the company does. This will change soon because the company is going to remove the shotguns once we adopt a pistol. We still carry an array of S&W mod 10, 13, 65 and Ruger security six loaded with .38 special +P 125 gr. This is sad because most employees do not like the shotgun (I can't figure why) and they somehow will feel OK trading the 12 GA and 38's for a .40 with 3 10 round mags.

Myself I bought a short barrel then started buying all the extras then stopped all of a sudden. Sort of thought to myself what do i really need this stuff for?
Sure its cool looking but how much better is it really?
I even sold my extension, never got the heat shield or black stocks. Instead I found some really beautiful wood for 20 bucks and now ive got a shotgun that is custom for me, shoots great, looks great and didnt spend a tonne in extras.
Heres a short list of what ive got on it.
870 wingmaster action.
Re finnished fancy grade walnut fore and butt stock.
3" chamber 20 inch smoothbore barrel with rifle sights.
Extra thick kickeez pad
Swivel studs and a sling.
It didnt cost much and i wont lose much if i sell it.
Im not knocking the tac guns at all. I would just ask myslef before
I buy all that stuff.
Will it work better or will i shoot it more with all the addons?
Since someone stated the police use plain jane wood i suppose
Ive got a pretty sweet little tac gun.
What does Tactical really mean?
Just my two cents.
Mind you if you do get a bunch of add ons do post the resutls.
