Shotgun advice

good day all,

I'm a relatively new shooter and very new hunter, this fall I have decided to do some major bird hunting and from what i've read and heard my 30-06 isn't the best choice for hunting ducks :).

I have more or less picked the shotgun that i want, either the Remington 870 or 887, but my major question is, how important is cammo on the shotgun?

I've been looking at Cabela's where I've purchased most of my firearms from and am a bit stuck on the price jump upwards of $130 for either shotgun for cammo.

so, is it worth dropping the extra cash and getting a ###y'er looking shotgun, or save the cash and get a nice black synthetic? also your 2 cents on the 870 and 887 will be welcome and appreciated.
 
It is not important at all. I have killed a pile of ducks a geese before camo guns came out. It does offer a little more scratch and rust protection. If the budget is tight by all means skip the camo.
In my opion the 870 is better gun than 887. The 870 wingmaster a better gun that the express. The Bps and super nova are also top end guns. Good luck with your choice
 
Camo (especially on the firearms) is 99% for looks. There is some argument that the camo paint provides a bit of extra scratch and rust protection but that's a big cost for that. When I bought my first shotgun 2 years ago I had to make the same call. I decided to go with non-camo and if I got dings on the barrel and receiver I would just get them refinished and it would cost much less than getting the original camo look. I have not regretted saving that money at all.
 
I have both and i grab my 887 90% of the time but thats just me and your going to get fan boys of both camps chiming in. There were a #### load of problems with the nitromag when it came out i havnt had much problems with mine except the odd double feed from me short stroking it.
 
Camo isn't important in a shotgun or clothes really or decoys lol. I have killed tons wearing plain coveralls hiding in grass in a good spot with a black synthetic shotgun. I would say it might be nice to get the 3.5 super magnum 870 though, steel just isn't as good as lead and any help is nice. My 870 in 3" doesn't work well with the cheap 2.75 trap loads anyway so might as well go for 3.5 for hunting purposes.
 
i opted out on the camo and have no problems waterfowling. Went with synthetic so I dont have to worry about it
 
I went though the same motions a while ago. While I agree with most here that camo is a bit of a gimmick, I really like the look and was more than happy to pay an extra +-50$ (Winchester SXP) for it. That's what it all comes down to IMO.
 
Like everyone has previously said, you will not bag more birds because you have camo on your gun. By the time the ducks see your gun, you should be shooting at them. It does come down to your taste and budget. Personally I like the camo look and didn't mind spending a few extra bucks to get mine in camo. If you don't care for camo, then black synthetic will work fine. I do suggest with going for synthetic over wood as you will be out in the water and swamps.
 
GlouGloug I hear great things about the sxp is it really buttery smooth for cycling? I have an 870 and winchester model 12 for reference. Quick question, don't want to hijack the purpose of this thread :)

I cant compare with anything else because the SXP is my first shotgun. I can say that it is indeed smooth and I am very pleased with it. There are a few SXP threads in this section if you need more info.
