so I came back from the range and as I was cleaning my weatherby pa 459 tactical I noticed a ring at the top of the barrel. It is where the choke and the inner barrel meet, yes I fired sst slugs through the barrel. The ring does not go all the way around the barrel. my question is can I reuse the barrel or am I SOL and need to get a new barrel. suggestions anyone.

A bulge, its toast.

I have fired many different slugs through full chokes without problems.

You might find you'll end up with another bulged barrel if you use slugs in the new barrel.

Since I am assuming you are using screw in chokes, I don't think I would trust it. I would be more inclined to go the cut and re thread route (BUT I would have the gunsmith take a quick look first, it may just be ok)

What constriction were you using on your screw-in choke? It's generally safe to fire most slugs through even tight fixed chokes, but if you have the option of changing them, you should go to a Cylinder or Improved Cylinder. Otherwise it can cause stresses at the transition between the two parts, and in the threads. Or were you just using the ported tactical Cyl choke?

Was the choke turned all the way down, tightly, or did it come loose?

How many slugs are we talking about?

The Hornady SST slug is a sabot-type, for use in fully-rifled barrels. You weren't using a rifled choke adapter? Pretty pricey rounds to be flinging about like that. Still, the projectiles are a significantly smaller diameter than the bore, and the plastic sabot fills up the barrel, so I don't know that it should be pushing too hard on your barrel. Maybe part of the sabot got stuck, and caused a blockage for the next shot?

thank you for all your advice guys. for now I am going to have the gunsmith in Calgary look at it and maybe he can get me a new barrel otherwise I will have a pa459 receiver sitting around.

I was using a screw in choke. in the past I had shot led slugs through it but someone gave me a bunch of sst slugs and obviously I should not have cycled them through the weapon.. lesson learnt..
for some reason everyone is selling the pa459 but no one seems to be able to get me parts. kind of sad cause I really like the gun.

it was a door knocker cylindrical choke. on the inside of the barrel it mated with the chrome part. by the looks of it the bulge has appeared where the choke meets the chrome and therefore iam thinking that there was a gap between the two. if I get the barrel cut can I fire the shotgun without a choke??? I use it for cqb practice.

You do realize some barrels are flared at the muzzle end to accept the choke it self . post a pic of the barrel with area in question .

It will be fine to use if you cut the barrel back, it may not group as well as it did with the chokes, but it will not harm anything.

Read post # 13...my CZ Ringneck has the "Bulge" where the Chokes screw in.....post a Pic, as mentioned....some Guns are flared at the end from the Factory.

Ditto - quite possible it is not a bulge from shooting, quite possible it is a factory made 'flare'. Lots of tubed barrel are made that way. Have it checked out before butchering it.
