This will be my first season turkey hunting and I'm wondering if I should paint/camouflage my shotgun for this? I will be using and older Mossberg 500AB with 30in full choke barrel. It certainly doesn't sparkle in the sun anymore, just wondering if he really needs paint.

Also I plan to pattern some turkey shells to see what this gun likes to shoot the best. This gun will take 2 3/4" and 3" as well. Is there any point in trying 2 3/4" turkey shells, or does everyone use 3 or bigger? I'm 99% sure this gun has never fired a 3" in its life would that matter?

Paint it if you want...or use camo tape (remove asap at the end of the day-holds moisture).

For the shells...you had better see what your shoulder likes 1st. Those 3" turkey loads are brutal.

I bought camo tape.

I put a strip on an old 22 a month ago just to see if there is any
adverse affect on the finish when I take the tape off.

Yes, I left it on my Citori for a week...sticky residue, and rusting patches. It seems OK if you take it off the same day.

I wouldn't bother with the camo at all. I been using my 870, for turkey, for years now, with no camo pattern. It doesn't make a difference. As long as you are completely camoed and sitting still.

Camo firearm not really required. Turkeys can spot movement like a MoFo though, that is the bigger concern IMO. I only use 2 3/4" shells, no need for anything bigger, unless you are taking pokes at them past 30 yards, again not a great idea. I try to keep shots inside of 20 yards. Find a shell that patterns in your gun, and your good to go!

Thanks for all the advice. I wont paint or tape it up then. I would probably do a bad job painting....... and tape sounds like a mess !

I started turkey hunting last spring and bagged a 21 pounder with my old Mossberg 500A using the stock screw in full choke (newer barrel) and Federal Flitecontrol 3" No. 5's at approx. 25 yards. Using this combo the pattern is pretty decent at 35 yds. As far as camo goes, I taped mine up with Hunter's Specialties Realtree AP tape and left it on the whole five weeks with no rust or sticky residue on the gun when I removed it, but I wouldn't bother with it again. I think that camo on a turkey gun is overrated. I know lots of guys who bag their birds with old wood/blue guns, and you'll see lots of pics in magazines of successful hunters with non-camo shotguns. Having said that,I won a camo turkey gun last year and I'll be using it this season, but I'll use the old 500 on occasion if my son wants to borrow the new one (NWTF Mossy 500 Super Bantam 20 ga. to which I added an Indian Creek choke tube).

Shot my first bird with a Mossberg 400G, wood stock and shiny blue. I didn't even have a decoy out, the only thing that bird saw was muzzle flash.:D

Worry more about movement than camo.;)
