shotgun chamber question

OK people I brand new to the shotgun scene.
Bought a Remington 870 with a short barrel with sights on it.
The barrel says it chambered for 2 3/4 and 3 inch both.
But what I was wondering is if I bought a barrel chambered
for the 3 1/2 inch shells could I shoot them or will it
screw up my gun?I dont sure if the action would hold up either.
Like I said I new to the shotgun scene so be gentle..lol

It won't hurt your gun but the gun will neither feed 3-1/2" shells nor eject them. The 870 Super Mag receivers have lengthened/shortened internals that allow the 3-1/2" shells to cycle properly.
 
The ejector has to be moved bacwards and the ejection port has to be lengthened.
You can modify them to my understanding but its not really worth it. A better thing is to buy a super mag 3 1/2" 870 and swap the tactical gear from your short barreled gun onto the supermag then sell off the tactical reciever and supermag stock set to somone that has a combo kit they want to turn into a second gun. You may want to check and see if your short barrel fits the super mag reciever however.
 
Or you could buy a barrel with a 3" chamber and likely never feel the need for 3.5" shells.
I have guns that handle 3.5" shells and I can count on 1 thumb the number of times I've shot 3.5" shells through it, and I can't say the same results couldn't have been achieved with 3" loads or even 2 3/4" and I do a lot of waterfowling including sea ducks and geese.
 
As others have correctly said, you wouldn't be able to feed or eject the 3.5" shells. In all honesty, you will find that 3" chambers are more than sufficient for all hunting. If the short barrel is undesirable there are plenty of used barrels for the 870 around and if you keep your eye out, you will find one. If I was buying a new barrel from Remington, I'd buy the 28" or 30" vent rib, but that's just me.
 
price the 3.5 inch shells first and then report back, paper does not know the difference between 2.75 and 3.5, but your shoulder will
