Hi guys,

So even though I shot quite a bit in my life, shotgun is something I have never carried in the army.
I'm very comfortable with rifles & handguns, but am a newbie to shotguns, and will appreciate your advice with my first shotgun.

After reading this forum, talking to couple of buddies and visiting several gun shops, I thought I knew what I want. And then this gun store from Vancouver put the Beretta A300 on sale, and I am now rethinking the whole thing.
I'm not mentioning the name of the company cause I don't know if they are sponsors to this site, and I have read here before that you don't like people doing that. If anyone wants more info, I'll give it as a message, but I do not intend on promoting any special at stores until I learn who is a supporter...

So originally I was going to buy the Benelli Nova, cause it's cheap ($475), reliable, and I really liked the button under the pump, for you to empty the chamber without cycling a fresh round. And again, not a shotgun kinda guy, so I thought the less I spend on this gun, more I get to spend on other guns I will shoot more and enjoy more. Then I was visiting this gun store and was recommended to pay some premium ($150) and get the Supernova, because in theory it will 'reduce felt recoil by 48%'. So from $475 original investment I have settled on $625 for the Benelli Supernova.

Now these lovely guys at BC post the Beretta A300 semi auto for $800, again it's a 'small' jump from $625, but this has got me confused all again and looking at the Nova for the second time.

I'm not too big physically, only 5'9" / 160lbs, so if the Supernova does reduce recoil by that much, I think it's worth it. As for the Beretta, honestly I don't care much for the semi auto, anyway the shotgun so called 'magazine' can only contain 2-6 rounds, but I was thinking that Beretta is a good brand for a shotgun, and that the semi auto would be a 'bonus'.

My questions to you guys:
1. Anyone around my size has shot a Benelli Nova? How's the recoil? Knowing the gun now, would you have paid extra $150 to reduce the recoil?
2. Is Beretta actually a better brand, or am I just a fan, cause this was my first gun back home?

Any other comment / recommendation will be highly appreciated.

Cheers :)

Get the Nova. It's slimmer and not as bulky around the receiver/trigger guard area, and honestly, if you're only going to shoot 3'' magnums out of it, the recoil isn't bad at all. It's an 8lb steel/polymer beast of a gun that soaks up recoil. You probably will never need to change out the stock to warrant the Supernova.

It's more important to see if the Nova/SN fits you as they feel way different from other pump guns.

My nova after polishing the bolt catch has been 100% reliable for a few thousand rds. My main complaint is the action is way to long, wish I bought the short bbl, wish they had a 3" action

They only come in 1 flavour: 3.5'' magnums

While I don't shoot 3.5'', the massive ejection port is easy to 'combat load' that 4th round in when hunting waterfowl.

I just picked up a supernova and so far it shoots great. Hardly notice any recoil at all shooting 2 3/4" 1550fps waterfowl loads. Haven't tried 3" loads yet hopefully later this week. So far it is a great gun.
