As someone who never owned shotgun but is considering one, I would like to know how they are currently classified into restricted and non-restricted. Would like to know semi-auto vs. pump, barrel length, stock type etc.

You can get 12 inch or 14 inch barrels ...they arent restricted...its not barrel size but overall length.

Heres the scoop as I understand the laws.

Shotguns are non-restricted by type (as a shotgun)

Exceptions being a specific model of highstandard (?) which is restricted by model, check the CFC website

Some shotguns are prohibited by name because they are too evil for us peace loving canooks, or so our ever benevolent dictators tell us.

A shotgun can be prohibited if you shorten it beyond 660mm or barrel less than 18"

If a factory makes the shotgun either shorter or the barrel shorter it is OK and non-restricted.

If a semi auto has a barrel less than 18.5 inches than it becomes a restricted.

Semi is limited to 5 rounds only.

Hope this helps.

Shogun: What will your main purpose be for the shotgun ? Hunting, home defense etc ? I own a Mossberg 590 and a Winchester 1300 Defender, both with Pistol grips and telescoping butt stocks. Dlask has a nice remade Remington 870.
