For those of you who have used the Derya MK10 and or the new Derya MK12, is it more than just a range toy or could it be used as a "do it all" type gun?

I currently own a 28 inch 870 Super Mag that, up til now, has only been to the trap range. I am planning on trying goose, grouse and deer hunting this season. I currently also own 2 centerfire rifles: a 223 bench bolt gun and a sporterized SKS....both of which are not great deer guns. While extremely accurate, my 223 is too small in my opinion and I would rather have something a bit less barnyard than a SKS. The last thing I want to do is wound a deer. Furthest shot would be 100 yards.

I was thinking about either selling my 870 and getting a MK12 and using it as is for the above purposes (trap, goose, grouse and deer) or putting an optic and a proper slug barrel on my 870. Both options will cost me about the same in the end. Nothing wrong with the 870 but it is a bit long and awkward to carry through the woods and having an AR patterned semi auto would be nice as i am very familiar with it. With the reported relatively tight groups the MK12 is getting with slugs and the stock flip up sights at 100 yds..it has me thinking. Or, I could just keep the 870 and go pickup a cheap 783 or a Axis combo for deer. Either way, I need an excuse to add an MK 12 to the collection. :)

I have very little practical experience with shotguns but I really like the idea of the MK12 (and it just looks bad @$$) but what say you shotty aficionados?

That type of shotgun isn't ideal for flying targets. Not saying it can't be done but you will do much better with a traditional type shotgun
For slugs and deer hunting or turkey hunting at basically stationary targets it doesn't matter. Personally I prefer rifle for big game although I've taken several deer with both slugs and buckshot
You only live once. If you want the derya than do it. If someone gives you crap for it...punch them in the throat you don't need that kind of negativity in your life

Within 100yds a 223 or 7.62x39 will drop a deer. A tsx in the 223 does a fine job on smaller big game animals. Just limit your range and don't take questionable shots.

I usually won't wander into these topics, but Stubblejumper & Brybenn are both bang on. Your 870 is far a superior shotgun for shooting clay targets than the Derya ever will be. That having been said, for around $1000 you can step into a number of decent trap dedicated shotguns(a used Bt-99, a new BPS Trap, a used O/U Browning or Beretta, etc) which will hold resale value a lot better and is designed for the purpose of trap shooting. The closest thing I use to tatcical shotgun at a clays field is once in a blue moon I shoot a couple of rounds with my Winchester Defender, it is not ideal to for shooting skeet to say the least, but keeps me use to it for bird season. The muzzle blast from these short guns is rather impressive.

I'd get a different barrel for the 870 you already have and hunt with that, they have a rifled barrel with a cantilevered scope mount or a threaded for chokes with rifle sights in the 20-23" length. Rifled barrel will be good for longer shots with sabot slugs but the one with rifle sights and smooth bore w/ chokes will be good for rifled slugs and shot for grouse etc.

I disagree, with a slug barrel it still be 100 yard gun. I would sell the SKS and set up to a dedicated deer rifle, even a Mosin-Nagant could be had for the same money as the SKS.

Well, i think you're fine with it. Fit is everything. Look is in eye of beholder. Ljutic? Space gun is ugly as sin and most people in this sub forum would likely trash it as well. But it's a 4K+ gun that eats clays.

Fit, practice, repeat. Be happy.

Consider the limitations of each gun. One sucks in bush compared to other. One will likely garner scorn and snarky comments at clay time. However, betting with the snarks and taking their money by outshooting can offset ammo costs or at least post shoot beer. If you practice and get at least decent. Fit, technique and practice can rapidly overtake any limitations of a particular gun. You could even dust clays with a rifle if you practice enough. But a rifle is lots of practice.

If you're going to shoot clay targets in a field with a hand thrower use whatever you want however if you plan to visit a club you'd best stick with your 870.

Clubs may not permit "combat style" shotguns or have barrel length requirements (usually 26") and the Derya would fail on both counts. Even if the clubs allow it you may be the subject of some ridicule.

It's not about looks, it's more the silly carry handle rather than having a longer rib or smooth barrel . If there was a rib extending from the carry handle to the front sight, it wouldn't be as bad, but as is , it is a terrible design for wing shooting

What was the intended purpose of the manufacture of these type AR style shotguns? I can't imagine them being useful in wingshooting and the clays games.

Most of those shotguns are purchased by people that want the tactical look, and that could care less about the clay games or hunting. From what I have seen, they tend to be used to shoot stationary targets

From what I've seen, they are used for shooting pictures for posting on social media. Hence the for sale used ads always saying low round count.

Listen to the advice you have asked for and forget the gun that "looks bad @$$". Buying such a gun bases on looks is for pimplesqueezers anyways.

Why not "bad a$$" up your 870?

You can always purchase other barrels for the Remington as well. Short if you are feeling tacticool or go full length for clays or hunting. Or a slug barrel with optic.

Swap furniture easily as well if you want to go with a more vintage look.

If the MK12 floats your boat because of the looks, go ahead and buy it. If you plan on using it for your stated purposes (trap, goose, grouse, deer) it will be for sale on the EE in short order.

Pls don't go to a trap club with an ar style shotgun... They are no good for wing shooting and you will embarrass yourself.
