Shotgun Firing Pins

You can make one at home with: a drill, a hacksaw, a file, a calliper and an old drill bit (or a nail). If you’re lucky, your sacrificial drill bit will be the same diameter as the fat stem of the existing firing pin. Cut the back end off the bit - longer than the final size you want - and chuck it in the drill. Lean the drill against something and start filing the spinning bit down to the correct diameter. After that, repeat the process for the actual pin end. Cut the waste end off the bit and there’s your firing pin. Filing the groove for the retaining screw is the final step. If you don’t have a vise , use the drill to hold the pin in order for you to file that groove. Another way of making the pin end is to drill a small hole in the centre of the stem and drive a pin made from another drill bit into it. I used a decapping pin from an old sizing die for this final step.

Your only cost is your time so you can afford to mess up and have to start over.

Make several and you’ll always have a spare - which you’ll likely need.
