Shotgun Flashlight advice

I've tried mounting a flashlight a few different ways but I find I prefer to use my gun without one. Live targets are the best way to really test out the performance on your gun. I'm just saying, whatever you mount make sure you test it out in a live fire situation at the range. No telling what might happen if you never fire live ammunition. Sometimes doing tactical maneuvers in the basement with a flashlight mounted on your gun can teach you a few basics. But when shtf you better be able to keep the gun going for the long haul and accessories will not improve function of a gun that has never been tested on live targets. Practice makes perfect so make sure you practice daily. And never run a gun dry. Lube is critical for performance, especially in a live fire scenario. Be safe, and remember to practice strict trigger control. Accidental discharges are preventable with diligent practice and training.
As far as mounting location goes, has anyone had issues with the light on the side of the forend? I would think that when you cycle the action you'd get a shadow cast in the beam pattern. But maybe it's quick enough that it doesn't affect your vision enough to matter?

Those like to develop a "strobe" function when subjected to abuse. If you plan on making any follow up shots on a lit target I'd probably spend a little on a light.

A candle strapped on with dental floss would be more reliable than a princess auto flashlight. Or if it's just for show, make one out of cardboard and put a glow in the dark sticker on.
I think most people that need a light on a gun need one that works when it is needed to work. If it's just for decoration then fill your boots.

I feel that weapon lights, especially on a firearm with as much recoil as a shotgun, should be an area of a build where you shouldn't skimp; buy once, cry once. That said, I've never had to engage in room-to-room building clearing, so feel free to take my advice with a grain of salt.

If you're on a budget, check out the TacStar WLSC-1000, I paid about $45.00 for mine. The kit comes with the stuff to mount on a tube extension, dunno if that is what you're looking for. It's 90 lumens I think, which is far from some of the surefires, but not bad for what you pay. I have one on my 870, lots of rounds through it and the light works fine.

I have a Streamlight TLR-1 ($120-150) I picked up for use on "whatever". It's currently on my 887 Tactical....a little awkward to operate because it's mounted so far forward (side rail) and I didn't bother with a remote pressure switch, but it'll do the job and it's very bright.

Fenix TK10 in Cadex MOD-C clamp. Low profile and very rugged.
I was considering the Streamlight TLR-1 as well, the latest model is 300 lumens and can be had for $130 shipped on Ebay. But I ended up going with a SF forend for my Mossy 590A1. I used to own an 870P and had initially had a TK10 with a barrel mount but I just wasn't crazy about it and ended up going with an SF forend. Much more money but the difference in handling was significant.
I have an X300 mounted on my 870. Yeah it's pricy but it's quick detach. I have rail pieces for a light on most of my firearms so I can swap it around. Don't need another light and wanted a solution for everything. Works awesome, stands up to the recoil and best of all I can operate it with my finger tip so I don't leave it constant-on. It's mounted on the forend, right side. Very bright and solid beam. If you want something cheaper you can't go wrong with a Streamlight TLR-1. I don't think the strobe model is at all necessary but to each their own.
