shotgun for 3gun matches

Unless you are hunting birds, there is no need to plug the mag on pump actions. Semi's of course can only take 5 of the longest shell the gun is chambered for in the mag tube.
 
I run with an 8 shot tube on my 870 with 6 rounds on a side saddle and 4 more in the speed feed stock for a total of 18 rounds of 12 gauge.

When I hunt I just plug the tube but keep the extnetion ( it intimidates the birds).

I got stopped by a CO once........needless to say we "discussed" the situation!! LOL!!
 
... Years ago when I was shooting the 3 gun matches, the 870 was all I could afford/borrow. The magazine extensions does shift the point of balance/handling, were I to shoot the three gun matches again, I'd DEFINITELY go with a semi-auto (your choice of Brand) with an extended magazine, one that didn't quite go to the end of the barrel with very strong clamps holding the barrel and tube extension together and forming a solid mounting point for the sling. Probably, based on personal bias, a Remington Wing-master, adding only the sling and extended safety button(and the extended magazine tube) .... the semi autos are faster, and eliminate the chance of "short stroking" a pump gun, and you don't need Magnum shells either ! .... David K... ps The Migratory Birds Act mandates the 3 shots when hunting duckies etc.otherwise, basically, no plugged 'tube.
 
I'd love to push the limits with an 11-87 3.5 inch chambered gun running an extention. Just so long as the tube won't take the sixth 3.5 shell!!!!!!
